First thoughts - Defining Gravity

Not sure on this. First its some toy specific scifi (not spelled syfy, that would be silly), and has some interesting characters. Then again its got a little too much broadcast tv, and seems to follow the Lost strategy of back stories and mystery, almost to a cheesy level. SOme things are cool, like nanofibers in their clothes providing gravity, but then why does that work when the guy walks around barefoot?

Anyway, looks like we have two new scifi shows, this and Warehouse 13, so let's see how it does a few weeks in.

Oh, just to get some notes in (so I remember to start recording) There's another show coming up on broadcast, Flashback I think, looks like a take off of Vonnegut's Timequake, and another Castle like cop show on USA called White Collar (con man reminds me of Jim Carry) Is it just me or are a lot of the new actors on tv lookalikes for some movie star? It's getting uncanny, as if they're siblings or something.

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

I only caught the last half of the show so I really don't know what the concept was but I definitely see your point about trying too hard to be like Lost.

As far as Flashforward it is based on a novel by Robert J. Sawyer. He is not the greatest of writers but that and The Truth Machine (James Halperin) are still two of my favorite sci-fi books. I definitely recommend reading both, although I hear the TV series will be very very loosely based on the novel.

That actually does not sound appealing at all. I don't know who this Greg is, but the last thing I want to see is his anatomy in space

However, the little I saw of Greys Anatomy, I do see a resemblance, with much cooler high tech toys and the whole lost backstory. (actually a bit of Eureka too if you look at the whole first season artifact thing)

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

And while we're at it, BTV really needs a way where you can scan ahead to new shows and schedule them before they show up in the guide. I know we can use keyword search to email us, but there should be a way to get info online and enter it to preschedule a show.

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

The carbon-based spousal unit and I watched Defying Gravity last Sunday. There's definitely some elements of Grey's Anatomy and Lost in it, and that's not a bad thing. Not the best show I've ever seen, but I love space stuff so it was a welcome break from the cop or hospital show of the night. I've always liked Ron Livingston also, good to see him again.

Thanks for the tip on White Collar, I hadn't heard about that one. Looking forward to Flashforward this fall.

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

Yeah, I'll give Defying Gravity a shot. I'm a sucker for scifi, they hooked me with the mystery stuff, and their logo has a fractal in it. Looks like the Mandelbrot Set, fractals are cool! There's a NOVA repeat coming up about fractals, too, Hunting the Hidden Dimension, gonna have to watch it again.

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

Speculation on Defying Gravity at TV Series Finale, and it's not good.

Fortunately though if it gets canceled then recordings from the Canadian channel will probably find their way out to certain download venues. Hopefully.

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

I think what they did with Battlestar Galactica was probably the safest bet. Start as a miniseries, three nights, get good enough ratings you go for the series. IF not at leat you completed the story, maybe spinoff to another network.

Scifi (correct spelling) has never caught on with the reality tv diseased mainstream, it confuses them or makes their brain hurt. (unless its something like starship troopers). Canadian shows don't seem to do as well either, I remember a great series called Wonderfalls that ended abruptly and had to be downloaded to conclusion. (they did air the rest in Canada though)

I enjoyed it...wasn't mind blowing...but it kept me interested. But I am also a sucker for anything with a spaceship in it =)

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

How was the PQ for you? Our local is running one sub, but their PQ has gone down since they started it (as have most of them) and ABC hasn't seemed to have the best PQ to begin with. Some of the space scenes, like the shot back to earth should have been spectacular, but were lacking. I've seen the same type of scenes on Smithsonian or Discovery that really do justice to good shots.

I have excellent reception OTA, so the PQ is solely the station output.

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

Looked awesome in HD....all I can say. I am in Canada....and watched it on the ABC feed.

It shouldn't be...but I find some stations HD is better then other stations HD...sometimes it feels like someone is cheating out there, cutting back the HD quality or something =(

Re: First thoughts - Defining Gravity

FYI - The name of the show is "Defying Gravity", not "Defining". It's definitely worth watching in HD. I'm amazed at how much stock the studios put into a show that debuts during the summer season which has traditionally been a wasteland for network TV and mostly reserved for reruns and baseball. I guess thay saw how successful some of the cable network shows were doing (i.e., Rescue Me, Leverage, Saving Grace, The Closer, and many others) and decided they wanted a piece of the action. I didn't even know the show was on until the third episode. I only watch first-run shows I record so I missed all the promos for any network summer programs. Good thing I can get missing episodes in HD from torrent sites (can't stand Hulu).
