Streaming of previously recorded shows (only those in wmv?)
I was under the impression that PVS could stream shows on demand, regardless of the format, by on the fly encoding. Say I have a large archive of West Wing episodes all in MPEG2, but I'd like to watch an episode remotely on my PDA (via wifi). I thought that PVS could encode an episode on the fly from MPEG2 to WMV (at an appropriate bitrate) for streaming. I mean, it can do this for LiveTV, why not prerecorded stuff? Am I just missing something? This sort of solution makes far more sense than having to transcode everything into a streaming format while keeping an archiving format.

Just answered my own question:
http://kb.snapstream.com/Kb.aspx?kbid=1128 Combine that with the revelation that you can't stream live TV with a PVR250, and I'm suddenly really dissapointed. I mean, if my system only uses about 25% of the CPU time to encode and decode the MPEG2 (during FSUI live tv), that leaves another 75% of the CPU to encode that same stream to WMV and stream it. And it's not like I'm asking for high resolution video. That 75% should get me 320x200 WMV in realtime. |
