Opinions on X10 products?
I face the same problem as most of you.. I need to somehow get PVS off my computer in my room, and onto the TV in the livingroom. I have a number of contraints though:
1) I live in university residence. No messing with the coax in the walls. No drilling holes in walls. No running ugly cables down hallways. Also, we've got university-issue 802.11g coverage (not to mention people in adjacent rooms with cordless phones), so there should be significant amounts of RF noise. 2) Tuition went up another 40%, so I don't have much money to burn. 3) I need to transmit the signal about 50ft. At first I was going to buy an ATI Remote Wonder and some sort of RadioShack Wireless A/V sender, and hope it had the range. Total cost would be about $225CAD. Then I noticed that x10 has a new kit called Lola that comes with their own software, plus a A/V sender/reciever and remote. The software's nothing special, but it will do untill PVS has some sort of jukebox capabilities. The remote is RF, with IR programmability, and some specialised buttons (artist, genre, album, etc) for a jukebox. They even have a version that will take VGA inputs. It all looks pretty decent for the money ($69US for RCA inputs, $99US for VGA). Only problem is I've heard conflicting reviews about how well it works. It's rated at 100ft, whereas the radioshack one is supposedly 300. Also, I think the reciever for the remote is built into the sender unit (at the computer) so the remote has to have enough range to make it all the way back on it's own. Anyone have one? Any first impressions? Does all the interference that's probably floating around my house make wireless impossible in the first place? Any better suggestions? WIll this remote work with PVS just like the x10 mouseremote? If this does work decently, it might be a good idea for SS to talk to x10 about producing SS branded units for bundling in the store. |
