Now taking pre-orders for the Hauppauge Media MVP

OK, PBMax, I'll bite

I find the concept of the Hauppauge Media MVP (not to mention price point ...) very interesting. It seems like everybody and his brother will be marketing one of these in the next little while. (Anybody remember when there was only two or three home router/gateway options out there ?) So this probably means that over the next few months there will be a dozen such products and that you should be able to buy one for $60, $75 after the dreaded mail in rebate ....

Don't get me wrong, I really like the idea of a $100 box that would in effect become an extension of my PVS library, but ...

[drum roll please]

Since Hauppauge and SnapStream probably have a good relationship/partnership, why wouldn't you guys work together and create a SnapStream/Hauppauge "branded" Media MVP with the same look and feel as PVS to select shows to watch, move them to another folder, delete them, etc.

Even better would be to make the MVP box a PVS client, but that's probably beyond an easy fix.

Imagine if I could watch a recorded show on this box, much like I could with PVS, delete or move the show when I'm done, etc.

That has to be doable since the engine is Linux, there is probably even a route to do a firmware upgrade down the road - some of your users might even hack it together, but SnapStream would do well if they offered such a box. They might even be able to offer for $125, keeping away for the battle that is coming in that market place, by serving their clients something no one else can !

Anyhow, you should pass this by the Boss. It would also be interesting to see how many others in the forums think this would be a cool idea ?

Anyone ?

(PS) This is probably very similar to what many users are trying to achieve using a moded XBox and XBox Media Player.

One more question - since you guys might have a pre-release model - is it able to play MPEG files that are in the process of being recorded by PVS ?

Thanks.

OK, boys and girls, the battle between Sage and SnapStream continues

And I thought I had a great idea ... I just made my rounds in the Sage forums and someone already brought this up on the 15th in the Sage sand box -

http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthr...&threadid=1678

The devs reaction there was very positive, but that seems to be the answer to almost everything. um ???

If they deliver on this though, that would be a major coup, in my view anyways.

(PS) I hope that coming clean on looking at the competition won't get me in any trouble here . You guys have been great to your users. I just can't help myself

looks pretty interesting.. from what I gather, the interface is actually rendered on the computer, and simply transmitted to the MVP like video. This might make it easier for Snapstream to get PVS working with the device. I imagine they'd need Hauppauge's blessing to do so though.

If this worked with PVS, it would definitely be a more attractive solution than a RF remote and wireless A/V combo.

I would bet Sage does this first. Their architecture is way more suited for it (being fully client/server). Just that fact that they have already rendered their interface to go out of the 350's video out only suggest it would be easy for them. Plus their development cycle is way faster. It would be one more thing that SnapStream cannot do. I love this competition .

The only bad thing about the MVP is that it only streams MPEG1 and MPEG2 streams. So my large Divx collection would not work .

I was contacted by Hauppauge today, and we have a MediaMVP on it's way to us to be reviewed at HTPCNews.com for the Launch of their new product.

Should be here in a day or 2.
