Any hopes of having a Palm OS rencode?

One of the nice features of SS is the ability to download something to a Pocket PC.

I was wondering if there are any plans in making this available for the Palm OS powered Handspring models?

I have no idea, but Palm must have an MPEG playback program of somekind.

I will see if I can find out.

Two options that I know of:
Kinoma video player (www.kinoma.com) uses its own special format, but its compressor is capable of taking mpeg as an input.
MMPlayer (mmplayer.com) plays mpeg natively as well as some other formats, such as divx.

Snapstream support for Palm would be very welcome. I personally would love it.

I am a big Bill Gates/Microsoft fan, but the reality is that Palm is the dominant PDA OS.

I bought my first PDA from Phillips with WinCE, but was forced to move to Palm when all the features I really needed started being integrated into Handspring models.

WinCE is a good OS because of its integration with the Windows OS, but I cant understand why this would be SnapStream's first choice for transcoding to some mobile format of video.

Shouldnt have SS developed a Palm solution before WinCE, or at least along with it?

Wouldn't you say that most Palm based PDAs are on a mono screen and most CE are color? The color palms were a bit pricey till the CE based PDAs became popular and I still don't think the screens are equal yet are they? I admit I have not looked at the new ones lately.

Don't get me wrong I have both and still like my palm pilots they both have a place in the market.

I think color screens are recent additions to both types. The WinCE Philips NINO I had was a monotone screen also.

You may have a point about the resolution. My color Palm has poor resolution. I dont know if this is the hardware or OS that is to blame for this.

If MMPlayer supports DivX AVI's, then you'll have your solution when 3.3 releases, since we now support automatic conversion to DivX.

You know, this is one of the things that I liked better about SnapStream competing products. The only two things I liked better than SnapStream was that it did DivX and that it had an MP3 Music Library.

I am glad to hear that SnapStream will be adding DivX capabilities. From what I understand the DivX files take up much less space on your hardrive than comparable quality.

I really think that a MP3 Music Library should go right next to your Video Library. SnapStream should strive to become the center of a high tech multimedia system.

Automatic queue to palm install needed

I believe the Divx transcoding will allow us Palm users to watch via MMPlayer, though I haven't verified this yet. Assuming it works, what's needed is a scheduler or some other application that SS triggers to move the transcoded file into the palm install folder so the file is installed on the next hotsync. Is this something that SS can do in 3.4?

Actually, for the last several years, the PalmOS ones have had much better screens. PocketPC's still have 320x240 max res( although there is some new rumored Toshiba that will have 640x480), while the Sony Clie, Palm Tungsten T3, and the Garmin IQue all have 320x480, and most other newer palms have at least 320x320. The new ones are all ARM based running OS 5, so they have the muscle as well.

Handspring is 160 x 160

Note, while the screen brightness is great, the Handspring Treo 600 (and other versions) have a 160 x 160 screen. Our Snapstream files will need to be transcoded to look good in those dimensions. Something to think about. Suggestions?

Ugh...I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to sit there while a large video file was sent to the palm via hotsync. Considering that a single 4 MB mp3 file can take almost 5 minutes to sync to the card, a video file would take sooooooooooooo long. A USB card reader would be a much much better option (and faster, too).

USB card reader

That would be nice, but we need via hotsync as 1st step, as that's what 99% of palm users will be using.

My sony clie has a mode that lets me mount the memory stick as a drive when the clie is in the cradle. Then I just copy the mp3/kinoma files over. If a palm os device has the hardware to play these videos, then it will have some type of expansion port, and a way to get files onto the media other than a slow hotsync.
