Question HDTV & Snapstream - Solutions?

Hi,

I am an old snapstream user and just revisisted the website and 3.0 is out! It came out a while ago and I am kicking myself that I stopped checking in about the new version.

I just built a new home theater system and plan to use snapstream as the heart of the system. I am going to have HD satellite that displays on my projector. For the pc I am getting a vga to component adapter and plan on doing 1080i from the computer to the projector. My question is if there is any way for snapstream to record in HD (1080i). And what about audio? Can Snapstream record Dolby Digital or DTS signals? What capture card should I get and is there anything else I need to get going?

Other stuff in Home Theatre Setup... (5.1 Klipsch Reference Speaker System, XBOX, Panasonic 5 Disc DVD-Changer, Sony ES Receiver)

Well DVD isn't close to HD.

720 X 480 is 480P...

HD Satellite is 1080i which is a lot more than that. Is 720 X 480 the max resolution snapstream will record at?

I guess the real question should be "Does Snapstream support the various HDTV Tuner cards out there?" my knee-jerk reaction even though I don't work for Snapstream is "probably not". And even then, the HDTV tuner cards will only let you record Over-The-Air HD broadcasts. So, you will not be able to record any HD programming from your Satellite provider - in HD anyway. Of course, you can still record these in DVD-quality via the S-Video in of the PVR-250. But I hear ya....Once you've gotten used to HD, DVD pales in comparison.

Your best bet is to wait for the HD-capable DirecTV Tivo receivers coming out later this year. I imagine they will be horribly expensive, but hey, you spent money on the HDTV and Home Theater setup, so what's another thousand bucks eh?

Oh, and your only other alternative to record in HD-quality from Satellite - at present - is to get a DVHS recorder.

My Setup:
Mitsubishi 55" Integrated-HDTV, DirecTV Sony HD200 receiver, Snapstream PVS on PC plugged into VGA port of TV (don't have an ATI card so can't use the DVI-HD Component adapter).

HD200 controlled by SS?

Chubb-

I see you have a Sony HD200. I want to purchase one, but I need to know if you can control it via serial cable using SnapStream? How are you doing it? I see the HD200 has a 'Authorized Service Only' serial port.

Thanks!

I am not using SS to control the HD200. In fact, I don't even have the HD200 going into Snapstream. I just have my PC (running Snapstream) plugged directly into the VGA port of the Mitsubishi - basically for playing back MPG, AVI, DVR-MS and WMV files on the TV.

You might want to wait for the HD300 which should be out by next month. It features simultaneous outputs on both the S-Video and Component Video. The HD200 has an either/or output so you can't say, hook up the S-Video to the PVR-250 card and have the component video directly into the TV and get video from both at the same time. With the HD300 you supposedly can.

Try using the Divco - FusionHDTV II. I am using it now and have no problems with SS but I have Digital Cable which doesn't do 1080i even though the card can support it.

I am looking at controlling the HD200 to record shows. I am interested in the HD200 since it has a DVI output to my DVI enabled 40XBR800. So there is no 'low speed data port' on the Sony? And can it output DVI AND SuperVideo at the same time?

If not - is there a DVI, Data Enabled, HD DirecTV receiver out there?

The Samsung TS160 also includes DVI out. I will be using component video though. I have a projector setup and have 5 component video sources feeding into my receiver then to the projector.

Peace,
RA
