SnapStream PVS on Tom's Hardware Guide

There's a review of SnapStream PVS on Tom's Hardware Guide.

I love THG so I was excited to see they were reviewing SS 3.x. I read the review and it seemed pretty positive until the conclusion at the end. They seemed to give it a fair review and even went so far as to try out one of the betas for 3.1 to get the PVR250 to work. I think that if they were to try the current beta, they'd be impressed with the progress. Overall I believe its an honest and accurate assessment. Go check it out!

Fair...

I agree it was a fair review and I was glad at the conclusion they cleared up some things. It was off to a bad start with their choice of hardware to start with. I was glad to see the other hardware was offered for the review. It was unfortunate that it was reviewed before hardware encoding was fully supported as that has made a huge difference in my experience. Also they would of liked the near future 3rd party decoder support.

I was also surprised in their comment on the switching of full/windowed mode as this has been supported for a while. Although I sometimes have issues if it is playing while I switch, but in all fairness I believe it to be my setup.

Great stuff SS!

I think the way the ATI issue was handled was a tad unfair. The reviewer implies that Snapstream's documentation should contain details of flaws in the ATI product. If documenting flaws in other people products was Snapstream's responsibility, they would never have time to release anything at all.

Otherwise a resonably accurate review of the product.

it's always fun when someone who doesn't seem to even know much of about a pc does a review on a product.. (as I find with almost all tomshardware reviews)

I find his findings not very good..

but at the same time, one of his observences is very true... about the pricing against sageTV (where sageTV includes a PVR250 with it for 200$..) I think this is something that Snapstream should look into.. as the pvr250 is now what I think is the "Choice card" for use with the application.

I have mixed feelings on that. After all, ATI certainly wouldn't/won't document their problems with <insert your choice of viewer/PVR here>. I could have saved myself lots of grief if I had known about the problems I would likely have with the AIWs. Fortunately, the PVS forum user community came to my relatively quickly.
