Windows 7 upgrade preorder

Just curious, the preorder pricing for Home Premium is $49 for the upgrade, which the best I understand lets you upgrade xp (via a clean install). I assume all you need is a valid XP disk and code (or authenticated xp install that gets wiped), if this is not the case someone post.

Anyway, since this is the most reasonable proce for an m$ product I was thinking of getting a few, are there any suggested thoughts that would be better? Preorders are good until July 11 or when they run out (I was going to go Amazon)

Anyway, figured may as well get a survey going, what are people's thoughts

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

I pre-ordered two copies of Windows 7. One for my everyday computer and another copy for the future since it was cheap. Not planning on ditching BTV anytime soon, but who knows, I may play with it a bit and decide I like the Media Center it offers.

I would have pre-ordered, but I wanted to go the Ultimate route.

And those that are ordering, are you going premium or pro?

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

Well, I decided to order one premium just for the price. My son really liked the interface and since I will need at least one windows machine I figure I may as well get one up to date. I'll probably keep my BTV machine on xp for as long as hardware supports drivers for xp. I'm still expecting to have my other machines move to Ubuntu exclusively once I work out the kinks enough to have them work with Beyondtv (so far placeshifter once vlc is fixed, damn, I need to check that). I thought about pro but the only benefit I see is xp mode, and for that I'd just as well use xp. I didn't really need that when testing win7 so what the hell.

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

Both of mine I ordered were just the Home Premium. The few things offered extra in the Pro version didn't justify the higher price for me. I installed the beta version on a spare computer when it was first released and it has been pretty solid...don't use it often but I guess I'll start in October

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

6 Home Premiums. With that many, I couldn't make myself pull the trigger from Pro, esp. with the limited number of extra features. If I need Pro for work, they can just pay for the upgrade at that time!

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

2 Home Premium and 1 Pro for me. I'll use Home Premium on my wife's laptop and desktop, and Pro on my desktop. The only reason I want Pro is for the Remote Desktop Host. I like to use Remote Desktop to access my computer through my Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart) remotely while away.

Typical Microsoft inconsistency. A major feature of Windows HOME Server is the remote access feature, which uses Remote Desktop into client computers, but they leave Remote Desktop Host out of HOME Premium. Go figure.

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

I just use RealVNC to control all my machines. Cheaper than buying Win7 Pro since it's free.

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

I picked up one Home Premium, the pro and ultimate didn't offer anything I needed. But, I will be keeping my BTVs all on XP. If it ain't broke...

Re: Windows 7 upgrade preorder

I ordered 2 copies, but may give one to my son to upgrade his Vista. I'm running the RC on one system now just using WMC and it's working perfectly. I still like BTV better, but must say WMC in 7 is impressive. I do the heavy lifting on my XP HTPC which is running so well I'm not about to mess with it. I don't really use my main pc for recording except to beta test BTV, but I will upgrade it since 7 really does look like it'll be a worthwhile upgrade and my hardware and software will work OK with it.

I think you need to review the specs again. The Remote Desktop Host is so that the Windows 7 Pc can be a host, not connect to a host. That feature stays in on the HOME Premium...to connect to other systems.
