Which setup?

I have two home theater pc's with hauppauge 1250's.

My two options are:

1. Run a full beyond tv on both.

2. Run one beyond tv and one link.

The reason I am thinking of running full versions on both is to save electricity as the main computer would have to be running while link is. Plus, I like watching hd on both computers.

Please, help me by providing some feedback.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Which setup?

If both computers have 1250's then you'd need both to have full versions. You can access recordings on the other computer by mapping drives. I would put both capture cards on one computer and use that as a server, then set the second up as a link box. You can still get two full versions, and use the second in link mode, but if it is in link mode it will not access the local files or capture cards. Plus with the price increase on the full version you're better off either getting link or using the placeshifting feature.

I'm not sure what you mean with this statement - you can record HD or watch live HD via a link system from a BTV server.

A better way to save energy might be to move to a more efficient system - what are you running now? I keep my BTV server and link server about as bare bones as possible - undervolted/underclocked CPUs, integrated chipsets (nforce9300), and the like.

Yeah, this might not be a bad idea. I was actually just planning on using the systems I currently have. Both pc's currently run some heavy specs. They were originally high end gaming pc's. The video cards alone pump a good amount of power. One has a 3870x2 and the other has a 260 216 core and a geforce 9800 gt for physx.

I'll probably just purchase two separate licenses.

Now if I have to reformat can I just simply download BTV again and use the same product number? The same liscense? Or do I have to get the cd with it to be able to do this? Or is the cd option only for if you don't have Internet in the future? I already have several remotes, so the extra 10 bucks for more remote clutter is just simply not worth it to me.

Re: Which setup?

save the download file to a disk and save your license, text file is fine then you can copy and paste when you install. If you go with two licenses you can setup two shortcuts, one opens btv server, one opens it in link mode connecting to your other server. You use this to execute - "C:\Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV\BTVD3DShell.exe" /networkclient:SERVER /networkclientpassword:PASSWORD, replacing SERVER and PASSWORD accordingly.

Nice, so with both PC's running as servers I can also run them in link mode to connect with the other PC's recorded content? I like this.

Plus, I really don't need the disk. Instead I can just make my own backup disk?

Thank you all for your replies.

Chris

Re: Which setup?

You can't run simultaneously as server and link, you have to shut one down (jsut the program, not the computer) to start the other. You can run as server and map another server recording network folder, that's about it.

Re: Which setup?

Zeta, I don't think you are correct.

I have 2 x BTV server licenses and 1 x Link license on my laptop. I know that if I am recording a show on PC #1 I can open BTV in Link mode and play content from PC #2 (or I can just open it in server mode and play content from the mapped folder on PC #2). Then when I am Recording on PC #1, and viewing PC #2 via Link mode on PC #1, I can view either PC #1 or #2 via Link from my Laptop. Not sure why I would want to do this, but I can (just tried it).
