media mvp and btv 4.9

I'm thinking of getting the media mvp and using it with btv. does anyone know if it works with version 4.9?

The MediaMVP does not work with BeyondTV. There is a user-developed "skin" for the MediaMVP that works with some versions of BTV (not sure if it still works or if it works with 4.9), but it isn't fully functional and is not supported for BTV. I think the only fully supported UI's for the MediaMVP are SageTV and GBPVR. And even then the HD support in the MediaMVP is pretty poor - requires transcoding on the server PC to make it work with HD.

Is there any hardware solution for use with btv or do you have to have another computer near every television?

There is no hardware solution for BeyondTV. You would need to use a HTPC at each television. There are some BTV users who use various media players and stream recorded content to those media players, but that doesn't provide liveTV support and doesn't give you the BTV interface.

The best BTV solution is to build a small, quiet HTPC that you can put at each TV and install BTV Link on each of those PCs.

The only HTPC software programs I know of that have non-PC hardware extenders with the HTPC User Interface built in are:
SageTV (
  • MediaMVP and HD100 extenders)
  • GBPVR (MediaMVP and PopcornHour)
  • Microsoft
Vista Media Center (several extenders and the XBox360)

Extenders have their pros and cons of course, but you'll find people with preference one way or another on any HTPC forum you browse.

Re: media mvp and btv 4.9

I've got most of the functionality that the MediaMVP plugin had working with the PCH/NMT hardware. I'm trying my best, with the help of others, to get BTV to work well with a PCH as an alternative to a MVP.

PCH/NMT = Popcorn Hour's Network Media Tank
Nice little device.

Re: media mvp and btv 4.9

To answer your initial question yes.

I am running BeyondTV 4.9 and use the Hauppauge MVP to stream video to a bedroom using the BeyondTV skin. It has occasional glitches, but is generally stable and usable -- just make sure you use the firmware that romanoj says is supported.

I have been considering MCE or an HTPC as well -- I just realized today that I can use the Wii in the living room to stream media using Orb which is cool.

But given that I have BeyondTV running, I want to figure out how to add the capability to stream Flash video (the only video support for the Wii's opera browser) using the BeyondTV Web Admin interface. I think it should be fairly straightforward to have the WebAdmin playback interface use VLC to transcode the video to FLV on the fly. It will tie up your processor some, but for those of us that have Nintendo Wiis already it makes a quick media extension -- for video using BeyondTV. I've read that others have gotten itunes to stream music to the Wii. I am about to post a request for information on the development forum on what it would take to add such a feature to the stream video/video playback sections of the admin interface.

Re: media mvp and btv 4.9

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I have a media mvp now which crashes the media mvp server after the initial beyond tv pluggin screen. I'm sure it's because I'm not using the Media mvp firmware that is recommended. For the first time ever google has let me down. Any body know where I can get the older firmware?
