Re: BeyondTV 5.0

MKV, no, not one of the most common formats out there, but does show up occasionally on bittorrent. Here's some info on it - "It is NOT a video or audio compression format (video codec)
It is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file." This is something for Beyond Media, not BTV (and good luck with that) and I think it will go as far as the 30 odd other proprietary format/packages out there.

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

You know what I mean Nick, just because you requested framebyframe and they did it in the nxt version mean u are special and they add it just for you. THere's been a lot of request of loyal members like u and SS either don't respond or they do it whenever, causing the users not to beleive in the software to much and switch. There's so many basic things that we suer requested and they haven't do it, but they keep adding stuff that not many ppl use. Like I said I like the software and I will keep upgrading it, so far this is the best Soft out there for TV, but it could be better by miles compared to competition.

It's also been stated many times that the feature request is a "mile long" obviously they can't integrate all those features at one time, and those that they do, they have to make sure that other things don't break. I like the new PlaceShifting, which many people have requested, though I'm not sure when I'll ever use it.

That's because I am special! My mommy told me so.

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

How about the ability to remove a channel from ALL lineups?

I have 7 tuners..

2 x analog low def
1 x digital low def
4 x qam hd

so that's 3 different lineups I have, with overlapping channels on each.
If I want to remove The Home Shopping Channel, I have to go into each lineup and turn off the channel.

It'd be great if I could just select the channel (in the guide or in the web admin..guide preferred so I could run through my channels and see each one first) and say "hide" and it would take it out across all 3 lineups.

Or maybe it should be like the record option where it has multiple choices..they could be:

remove channel from all lineups
remove channel from xyz1 lineup
remove channel from xyz2 lineup (each lineup name would be listed)

This would have to be somewhere that a casual user doesn't accidently remove a lineup while watching tv though.

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

Well, you can record from whichever lineup is related to a tuner, I do that to force recordings with one tuner (each tuner has a unique lineup). Problem with that is any issues with the tuner and you cannot record the show with another tuner. What i would like better is to set a tuner priority per show, so that it will try this tuner first, but if there is an unavoidable conflict or error other tuners will be tried.

And of course with the channel deleting, I keep my update channel lineup off so I don't have to manually block all the useless payperview channels that directv keeps moving. That is where we need to have an acknowledge step, everytime there is a new channel detected, deleted or moved, I get to choose whether it is hid or displayed in each lineup. This sounds like something that would be easier to do with btv negotiator, I'll mention on his thread, maybe he has something similar already.

My Requests are:

1. A fully integrated HD Hardware Client
2. Network/Virtual Tuner

But I know hell will freeze over before either will be considered.

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

I would like a delayed ShowSqueeze setting. So, for example, if I don't watch/delete a show in 3 days, it ShowSqueezes. So, I watch the original TP in the first few days. After that, it assumes that I might not get to it for a while and saves disk space.

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

I support the calls for a special-purpose Link system. I would rather not have a full Windows system for all my link boxes.

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

If we are putting forward ideas for the next version.. I have a few

1. Update the TV channel search to have a preview window for the current channel being scanned. That way you can see if there is something being broadcast on the channel.

Up here in Canada, there are some cannnels on the fringe that you can recieve, but the BTV software just chooses to ignore them. The method of doing a record doesn't always work.

2. Make a better web interface for programming guide.

I have my BTV setup as a server for my mutlimedia files. It feeds my XBMC connected to all my TV's. I don't watch live TV anymore. As no TV is connected to the BTV (or monitor for that matter), it would be nice to have a better TV guide interface to record shows.

Matt.

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

Honestly without integration, I find it hard to see anything justifying a 5.x series. When we jumped from 3-4, that was to get hidef. What would be the equivalent game changer for a jump from 4-5? Basically I see the 5.0 series as a continuation of the 4 series, small improvements, CC, maybe pip, but nothing to make it a momentous jump like 4.0 was.

BeyondTV 4.9 has clear QAM but does not support the Pinnacle HDTV PCI Card. Is That correct?, If not will it be in version 5?

Nobody knows.

I see, sadly, the end of BTV for consumers. The Enterprise is where SS is going obviously, and armed with a army of beta testers on the consumer side, SS is able to refine their enterprise product.

Because SS doesn't see the economics of going forward with BM, and because there are not clearly economical reasons to update BTV, I see no future for BTV consumer.

Pretty much what many have concluded over the last year or two...

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

Wow, pretty grim turn in this thread. I also wish SS had keep the BM product moving. But they didn't and it is not the first or last time a commercial enterprise didn't do what I specifically wanted. And guess what, BM is still running on my machine serving up music, videos, comics, weather, plus all the custom stuff I added. Do I wish they had kept it alive, sure, but I got my moneys worth.

I also prefer to maintain the expectation that SS will come up with some great enhancements for BTV 5.0. You never know, they may take some of the development for the Enterprise edition and roll it into the consumer version. But even if it is an evolutionary upgrade rather than revolutionary, I expect they will slip in a feature or two that makes it worthwhile for me to upgrade.

OK, now I know I risk flaming death,,,, but I think they do need to work on ways to get a little more money out of us consumers. That way the economics do work for them to continue good development of the consumer line. If you don't want to pay, then fine, there are free alternatives, go do them.

When I add up the bucks I spent on my BTV setup I realize the wife must never, ever see that number. But the percentage that actually went to SS is shockingly small. And for that tiny percentage we get a stable product, tech support, continuous improvement, free channel guides and free minor version upgrades. In my book that is a great deal.

Thanks SnapStream

Re: BeyondTV 5.0

Well, I agree with you, Dave. There has to be a viable business model for a product to endure.

My wish list is very simple, and trivial to implement: playlists. Let me set up an evening to shows to play back. Helps with the WAF.
