Hello...I understand that SnapStream can record a show..and i can play that back through my network (like a tivo), but will it allow me to stream live tv through my network? I don't want to record, just want to watch TV on my laptop in a location that does not have a connection for TV. Does anyone know if any such software exists? Thanks.

No. Currently, Snapstream will not do what you are asking (without recording).

Actually, I did not forget to point that out.
I am about 98% sure SnapStream said that you could NOT do this in the next release without recording (just like it is now). That would be a good item to have clarified with an official response. Jason Bottjen Quote:

Actually, YOU are right.
Now that I search back, I found that Patrick confirmed on 4/8/2002 that you would be able to stream live TV without recording in the Quartz version. Hopefully that was correct. Jason Bottjen Quote:

you're ultimately correct, but just not yet. the first beta of quartz to be released in the last week of this month won't have the live streaming tv. if you just want to stream live tv, you don't need snapstream... you can just use the free windows media encoder engine off microsoft.com. it can't change channels for you which isn't fun. you'd have to go over to the machine and close the windows media encoder, start up wintv (assuming that's the card you're using) and change the channel, close that and start the encoder going again.
but at least you can do it.

so you're using the hauppauge board? when you bring up the wintv2000 app, make sure the volume is all the way up. also make sure you hear the sound in that application otherwise there's something else going on... check the cable going from the hauppauge audio output port to the line-in on your sound card etc. let me know what you've tried so far.

Yup WinTV card. Everything works fine. When I tried the encoder and it wouldn't give me any sound. I checked the direct output of the card and there wasn't any output.
I can get the picture. I can overlay sound from a mic. I just can't get the encoder to turn on the sound from the TV card. I figured that the encoder didn't consider it a sound device and only turned on the video. Bob

the short answer from SnapStream is that it IS on the roadmap, but it is NOT at the top of the list at the moment.
the current high-level focus is maintaining current network features and adding other basic PVR features (mostly non-network features) -- live TV, a Windows UI, trickplay (pause, rewind, ff live TV) and a 10-ft UI/remote control interface.

Thanks again for the update.
I could really get used to all of this communication we've been having from you guys the past week! Jason Bottjen Quote:

Hi Kevin,
Can I ask you for some feedback on your Hauppage USB tuner? Are you happy with it? What can't you do with it? (as far as SnapStream is concerned). I'm thinking of buying a HP e-PC and need a USB tuner solution. Thanks, Scott... |

i was running the wintv usb for a good while. it won't do above 320x240 video capture; and if you look closely at the video that it outputs, it's very grainy, because there's a simple compression going on between the device and the computer that allows it to transmit over the usb bandwidth. the wintv pci gives a much clearer picture in the end. definitely still useable though if a pci card isn't possible. that's rather strange about you guys not getting audio out of your tuner cards though. try plugging a headphone set into the audio output on your usb or pci card and start recording the video.. see if you hear anything then. i've really never had a problem like this other than if the cable was bad or something other than the card itself was causing a problem. since it's not working with windows media encoder, i would give a call over to hauppauge's support line. they can probably help you get the right drivers and directx versions in there to have it run smoothly. btw srigby, the usb version also uses about 10-20 percent more cpu just for video capture on the 850mhz box i was running it on... apparently from the usb communication.
