How does quality compare to consumer DVD Recorders

Will the BEST recordings that I could make using SnapStream be less than, equal to, or better than the best recordings I could make using a consumer DVD Recorder such as the Philips DVDR985?

PVS concentrates more on small, easily streamed files than on quality. It uses the Windows Media codec, originally designed for fast streaming and performance over a network.
Even at the highest quality, the .wmv files produced will be no match for the .mpeg or .avi files produced by ShowShifter or PowerVCR, or a DVD recorder. Upcoming support is present for DivX encoding in v3, though.
With a fast processor (2GHz+), preferably Intel (due to SSE etc.), it is possible to manually edit the settings to give quite a good picture and sound, though.
