VCD and SVCD
I just captured a clip in vhs quality and used NERO 5 to convert it to a VCD. The reencode takes a while but I am impressed with the quality. I would like to see some native MPG1 and MPG2 outputs so I can drop it into the vcd without the second pass.
So far so good. I am on the first day of testing and I am impressed so far. What is everyone using for video out to the TV? This is the last part of my puzzle.

It does. But in my experience, a half hour show converts fine for the first 10 minutes or so and then the rest of the show has "blockiness" about every 3 or 4 seconds. But it IS pretty cool that Nero does this conversion.

Any suggestions? I wondered if it might have something to do with the fact that I bypassed options for creating the VCD menu, but never really went back and looked at it closely. |

Nero 5.5.5? Ya, that's weird that you don't see the blockiness that I get. I have Nero 5.5.6.4 and as I mentioned above, it goes blocky after about 10 minutes. Perhaps my burner is the problem? Although burning other VCDs from MPEG1 works perfectly.
It would be a real bonus if Nero could do this without having to jump the extra hoops to make WMV into a MPEG1 (or 2) first. FYI, my system: P4 1.6 512MB RAM Hauppauge Win TV WDM drivers (3.17) Win2K SP2 Snapstream 2.0

I downloaded Nero 5.5.7.2 yesterday to try and burn an mpg onto vcd to play in my dvd player. Totally unsuccessful. I was using cd-rw discs, that were blank, and I kept getting 'power failed' messages in Nero. This was using my internal dvd/cd-rw drive in my laptop. Thinking it was hardware, I tried my external HP cd-writer, but got similar failure. Anyone else had problems getting out of the gate with Nero?
Also, do I even need Nero to burn an MPEG1 file onto a cd so that I can view it on my dvd player? I tried burning it straight (in Windows) but my dvd player was not reading it at all. Thanks for any assistance you might have, Chris |

VCD has a different format than normal CD-ROM. More files is on the disc. Commercial DVD or VCD player requires these file to locate the video file. Disc burning straight in CD-ROM fromat will not be recognized by the player.

Chris,
I find www.vcdhelp.com is best resource out there for answering the questions you might have regarding VCD/SVCD, etc. I have not had the problems you've listed but perhaps someone there knows how to solve your woes. Enjoy. Geoff
