They're welcome to it!
I run a dedicated PVS machine, there's nothing really of any great value on it. I use a non-standard port, a firewall and it's a dynamic IP. The odds of something happening that I would find annoying or even notice are pretty low. At least low enough for me not to care. Man, all you chicken littles out there. The sky is falling, the sky is falling... |

Gotta agree here. A dynamic IP is NO security whatsoever. It'll slow down someone that has a grudge against you from just jackhammering your box, but the real danger is from people running port scanners on entire networks. Once your system gets compromised a little piece of code is all it takes to have your system report in, change your IP all you want, it won't matter. Sorry, but this kind of blatant disregard is the reason there are STILL Code Red infected systems out there banging away on web servers.

Oh, did I forget to mention that I have anti-hammering code running as well?
Ten failed attempts from the one IP address and it's blocked...this also catches port scanners. So, I'm pretty safe and happy as well...unlike the paranoid, frustrated, embittered majority out there who are just looking for something to complain about. Fear is a very powerful weapon. Your government has been using it against you for the last 50 years to get re-elected. Enlightenment crushes fear everytime. |
