Why OCUR and Cablecards are such a joke...

Anandtech also had a rather dismal experience.

I'll say it: MS and Hollywood and Cable Labs have *intentionally* produced a mockery of the intent of the FCC's rules. They have shown that they have *no* interests in allowing anyone, let alone pc users or people with their own equipment, access to content in a freely usable manner without some form of obstacles.

If they'd only treat people with respect instead of assuming everyone's a criminal, we could finally have a revolution in media, and they would make out like bandits from it.

Re: And then there's Vista MCE and Cablecard...

They suck, and they deserve all the piracy they spawn.

Ok, here's a side question, I know they have firewire enabled R5000 stb's, isn't there a requirement that all stb's need to have firewire AVAILABLE (if not on every model) and isn't the express purpose so that people can record tp's?

The point is to be able to connect them through firewire to either a TV or a DVHS recorder, which does adhere to the 5C scheme... It has never been about allowing people to make digital copies with their PC...
