Yes.

You can stream BTV over the internet. read this for a video walkthrough of how it works
And read this thread for the details and download

If you have two PC's then BTV Link is an excellent option also. It duplicates the BTV interface on another Network PC.

I hope that helps

Maybe he meant like a VPN to run link over the internet?

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

You can run Link over the Internet, using a VPN. I've done that, but the bandwidth is so low that there really isn't any way to actually watch content that way. The only useful part is being able to fully control the BTV server, using the familiar interface.

For what it's worth, I use Hamachi for this kind of VPN application and it works great.

For actually WATCHING programs over a low-speed Internet connection, you might want to check out ORB. You won't be able to watch the shows live, while BTV is recording them, but you can watch them once they're recorded, using ORB, and it is intelligent enough (much like Slingbox) to adjust the quality on the fly, depending on available bandwidth and latency.

Or as I mentioned above, you can just use the alpha version of webadmin and stream it over the internet without orb.

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

There's a new blog posting on setting up BTV with Orb that may be helpful:

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

As great as Orb is Soham, don't you think it's about time that SS started incorporating these functions directly into BTV itself? If we keep having to add free software to do the things btv doesn't do (and again that whole integration thing) at some point we will run out of things BTV does that the other "free" software (Media Portal, Orb, VLC) doesn't do...

Is it the second half of the year yet? nudge nudge, big grunting shove...

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

PS, you forgot to mention that Orb will also stream and placeshift your LIVETV, of course this means taking a tuner away from BTV.

Also I agree with the comments about cpu usage with Orb, it consumes far too much energy, I think the above posted community webadmin would be a better choice (and if SS would get involved!!!) however that allows streaming but not navigation, yet (again, once SS gets involved!!!)

Think of how cool it would be to be able to stream low resolution recorded shows and live tv over the internet using webadmin, (with or without vlc).

Of course, at this time the community webadmin does not stream mp3 files or pictures like Orb does, hmmm, what would we need to get that fixed, something that begins with the letter I maybe...

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

Anyone able to stream their HD (.TP) recordings with Orb? It doesn't work for me, says there isn't a compatible codec on the system which is funny since it's my BTV Link system.

Thanks,
Z

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

I was able to stream live hdtv with orb, never tried a tp file, I know that there are issues streaming streamsnipped TP files with the community webadmin (or vlc) plugin, are they streamsnipped?

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

I also found Orb to max my CPU.
I put up an image of where to find the VLC streaming links on the Recorded Shows view (after community webadmin install) here:

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

Is there a way to stream live video over the web such as sage can do?

I have a brand new wintv 1600 card but I can't get to do it, doesnt that card have a software decoder for live feeds to the web?

Re: Streaming beyond tv over the internet

The community webadmin with vlcplayer works on recorded files, not sure about livetv. I was able to do this with vlc player on network by accessing the tmep mpg file that gets generated from livetv, never tried over the network. Orb seems to be the best option for that, but again, cpu on the server gets maxed.

See Post #2 above for instructions on how to stream over the internet using the modified webadmin.

As Zeta mentions above, Orb also works but puts a big strain on my BTV server so I quit using it.
