Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07

http://www.ubuntu.com/

Release of 7.04. I like the live CD option. Sometimes helps when your hard drive fails and you still need to access the internet.

They are calling this a replacement to windows but of course, just for the basic users. I'm downloading now to try it out (I tried earlier versions before and was cool).

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07

The replacement to windows comment will go over well in the Linux world...we don't want a replacement, we want to be something different. I used in fall 2005. Not bad, but I found there were programs that could not run in Linux that I could not live without.

The Live CD option is nice. I had a laptop hdd controller fail and I continued to use the laptop that way until I got a new one.

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07

I've been running the previous release for the past several months -- very stable.

I'm (CRAZILY) in the process of Upgrading to the lastest release -- via the automated Updater.. we'll see how that goes..

I do have to mention -- that at least in Ubuntu -- the automatic updates work Flawlessly -- always checks for new releases of code -- prompts for the install if you want -- and updates on-the-fly. Being Linux -- 95% of the updates install on the fly -- so no reboot is needed -- I normally update on one screen and work on the other (True multiple desktops )

All that on a Celeron 500 MHz box to boot -- and it's pretty responsive -- I actually do most of my work on this machine.

I'm somewhat interested here, but besides that fact that it is free, and the fact that it is not MS, why do I want to use this ?

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07

if btv, firefly software, and bm ran on it i would go to it tomorrow. as it is tho i have no use for it atm. the cost got overruled by the fact that i can't find any games writen for linux that i want to play such as wow.

i might use it one day for a guest computer that is limited to browsing web sites or music playing maybe even a little word processing but i just can't see building a system around any linux distribution the way i currently use my systems.

though i am more than a little interested in ubuntu studio.

I am actually debating making my Mom's next computer Ubuntu. All she does is online banking, looking things at the internet. She doesn't read email because of junk email, including junk email forwards from her own sister!

If all you do with a computer is E-mail, word processing, and web browsing, I would highly recommend it. E-mail is a program (I think Evolution) that is written by Novell and rivals Outlook. Word Processing is Open Office. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it, I am not sure I will buy Office ever again. And web browsing is either Firefox or Opera.

There are also a ton of free programs. However, I rely on Photoshop Elements for stuff and I am not a big fan of Gimp.

I also agree - Snapstream needs to support Linux, at least for Link and firefly. I would make all my Link boxes linux in a heart beat.

On my new laptop, I have a huge partition, I may partition the hard drive and play with the new Ubuntu again.

Don't forget that Thunderbird 2.0 was just released as well!

I absolutely love Ooo's save as pdf option. If I didn't have to use Office for work, I might use Ooo exclusively, even on Windows. I still use a bare installation just for a free doc, xls, html, etc. to pdf tool

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07

I would happily move from Windows if BTV ran on it. Here's a vote for some day BeyondTV finding its non-windows resurgence. I think I'll add that to my BTV wishlist.

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07

Okay, I added a wish for Linux support as well as DVB-T. I wouldn't use DVB-T, but there are many, many others who would be using BeyondTV right now if it had it...

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07

I've been doing research, and as most of you have mentioned some programs for email, web, office and future multimedia, there are tons of programs out there (free too). http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

However, gaming is a different story. I have red some people have gotton to play UT demo on linux but not sure if it was a windows version or linux version.

There are also ways of running XP on Ubuntu: http://librenix.com/?inode=10259
But there are limitations but say run better under 7.04 but still limitations.

I have not used Thunderbird 2.0 in Linux, but I did hear that Thunderbird is released now.

My Wife is a federal government employee in the only agency that has a production requirement. She often will use my laptop in the car to do work on the weekends while we are traveling somewhere. I don't Office installed on my laptop because while I have 3 licenses for home use, two were installed on other computers no longer in use and I am too lazy to call Microsoft to get them released.

The first time she used Open Office Wordprocessor, we were both nervous, but as long as she saved in Doc format, she was perfectly fine.

Oh I agree. I remember Snapstream blasting users who posted this idea about 2 years ago. However, I think there are more and more users who would pay to move to Linux to get away from M/S issues. Imagine being able to build a computer without having to pay for an OS!

I use Kubuntu as my desktop and the kids desktops. It is much easier to manage and no bloat from surfing the web.

Games do run under Linux. Especially the UT series. Epic made sure it runs natively on Linux as well. I run UT2004 with no problems.

All in all, except for the special purpose stuff like BTV, every thing else I run is linux.

Crush, I've been reading a bit and noticed there is Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu. Ubuntu using Gnome, Kubunu uses KDE, Edubuntu for education, and Xubuntu is lite version of Ubuntu (any more?). I have downloaded both Ubuntu and Kubuntu to try them both out. but what's the difference between KDE and Gnome?
