Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
I have a feeling transgaming could help to get the directX alternative (Swiftshader) into Link software, but the problem with them is they are going to charge us user with a monthly/annual fee to use the Cedega product to run Link in Linux. That would completely defeat what many of us envision of building a linux box to run Link without having to pay M$ for an OS. http://www.transgaming.com/index.php...isplay&ceid=29

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
Man, I can barely keep up.
It is too nice of a day to mess with the computer, but I did make some progress. I decided to start here - http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,13...x/article.html , mainly because it had seven items and seems simple enough. Got Automatix, setup beryl, tweaked Firefox and thunderbird, got all my codecs, mapped drives, on and on... Anyway, we really need a working link solution. For now an emulator would be fine if it can handle HD playback, but long term SS needs to plan out a solution. The way I see it, the server will still be on XP (for now) so SS can still control who logs onto the server via product keys. More importantly, that can then be extended to stream over internet (although that will need a resolution adjustment like orb based on connection speed). Anyway, I'll try out any suggestions as I get a chance. It's a learning curve for me, but I'm doing all right so far it seems.

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
Ok, my Fiesty update. Found you can copy your windows settings to linux for Firefox and Thunderbird, import all data, settings, messages, addressbooks etc. Just copy the files from C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\thunderbird\default\random.slt. On linux your profile is a hidden folder in your home directory, /home/(username)/.mozilla-thunderbird/default/random.slt/ Similar for Firefox. You have to change settings to show hidden files.
Only issue was the default firewall blocks ports used by my webmail for yahoo and hotmail, so I set those ports to 1110 and 1025 instead of 110 and 25. I was going to try and use the vnc player to access my server, until we get a link solution. Haven't figured out how to access windows shares on other computers yet, any advice would be appreciated. chugging along.

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
It's been a while, but I think you have to use Samba to access Windows shares.

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
well, ubuntu is up and running on my laptop. I had two problems: one, I was an idiot with partitions (but at 2:30 AM finally got it finalized) and two, my wireless card was not initially recognized. After I get Ubuntu set up the way I like, I may play with link on my laptop.

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
I played around with Kubuntu 7.04 but just as a live CD on my BTV sever. Just wanted to play. Only for a short while though cuz I had recordings coming up.
I tried on an old laptop but it only has 128K of memory, and didn't work with the regular build. So, I'm down loading an alternative Ubuntu for computer with less memory to see how that goes. I'm glad your Chugging along, ZetaVu. Good 2 u, misteregg. I'm ready to play but slowly but surely (hopefully). |

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
I was able to access my windows shares with the network icon on the top bar, this let me browse and log into my windows network, and I mounted my shares (using samba in the background) However, cannot play the files yet, mplayer does not support samba out of the box (if you doubleclick the file, mplayer opens and doesn't work) and I haven't figured out how to do it in VLC yet.
Other sticking point, I have a Creative zen xtra mp3 player (yeah, its a big hulking thing, but it has a 60 gb 2.5" hard drive and I could theoretically insert a 160gb one, so it is basically a battery powered portable usb2 HD, only wish it charged through the usb port instead of the ac charger) anyway, totally off topic, but I installed gnomad2 and haven't gotten the two talking nice yet. But, still chugging along, I hope to have a working way to connect at least to recordings on my BTV server, then I start playing with WINE and/or the other emulators.

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
ZetaVu, Any chance your using Kubuntu? If so, I read something over the weekend (can't find it again) that said Kubuntu may have this issue (but not sure). There was a solution for it but like I said, can't find the link.
They tried Ubuntu and didn't have that problem out of the box. |

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
I'm using gnome. I tried mounting the drives and got an fs wrong type error. I'll keep at it, got some info on editing samba settings. Apparently a lot of people are having similar issues. (playing media files from windows shares).

Re: Ubuntu Rlease 4/19/07
ok, fixed (I believe) my network media issue.
First, tried to relaod samba, had the latest. Then, edited samba settings - in terminal, sudo gedit /etc/samba/smbconf search, find the term browseable, then remove the ; in front the first phrase and change from no to yes (not sure if this one was required but did it). then find next until you find the browseable under share definitions, and remove ; so it says browseable=yes then go a few lines down and remove ; in front of writeable and change no to yes. save this. then back in terminal sudo mkdir /media/(namepershare) sudo gedit /etc/fstab at the end add this for each share you want to mount at boot: //(computer name)/(shared file) /media/(namepershare) smbfs username=(windowsusername),password=(windowspasswo rd) 0 0 (note, two spaces before first 0, seven to second, assume this is important) to test, in terminal sudo mount -a you should have drives appear on your desktop for each share, and they are under you file system, /media directory. More importantly, now the media files play in mplayer or water you want. Next step, zen player and pocketpc activesync.
