You would think that it would be simple
Can anyone Please direct me to simple instructions on how to view my TV recordings generated by snapstream v 2.0 at home from another location through the internet. I have an AOL DSL account. The only documentation that I have found through Snapstream's website map is to "Watch Over the Internet Enter your machine's hostname or IP address from your remote location. You'll be presented with the SnapStream PVS Watch page and from there you simply access your recording's as if you were at home." Well, I am a dumby, and that is not enough information. I don't even know what in heck is my IP address, or Host name is. I ran IPconfig (Window XP: Start>run>cmd>ipconfig) and it came back with blah, blah "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Autoconfiguration IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0" What good does that do me? I stuck the address above "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" in my address window of the web browser at work, but the browser does not find anything with just that typed in. Thank You, Bruno [ June 27, 2002, 10:35 PM: Message edited by: PBMax ] |

Well I'll try to give you a bit of a start, although I'm far from an expert. Here is what I did
First if you are using a firewall - you need to open it for two ports 1755 8129. - this gets a bit involved if you are set to use DHCP or if you are using more than one computer at home. Under the configuration tab in snapstream I had to do the following Web Server settings --Generate Web Page --Port Forwarding - yes Streaming Server Tab --Force TCP/IP In your web browser try http://your_ip:8129 Although you should be careful about listing your IP online Hope this helps [ June 27, 2002, 06:46 PM: Message edited by: brianh4321 ] |

To add, when using ports (like 8129) be sure to put http:// in front of it. Internet Explorer doesn't always browse to ports properly with no http:// in the URL.
Try: ipconfig /all This should show you your external IP address. I use Deerfield's free DNS2go product to give myself my own domain name, so that I don't need to know the IP. You can get it at http://www.d2g.com. If you do that then you can then get to your server using http://brunolucia.d2g.com:8129 (or whatever name you chose). -Dan

Awesome! We are good to go now. I wish to thank each one of you who posted replies to my question. Each provided important information as I worked through a solution. With your direction, and some trial and error I identified one challenge being that my setup uses a dynamic IP, and then trying to figure out what it was. The last posting recommending DNS2GO was an excellent final step. Now I have my own constant domain name, and it works great. Thank You again, Bruno

Well I've tried all these good tips but I'm afraid it still isn't happening for me. I have a small LAN (4 computers...) that share a DSL connection. I'm using Win XP Pro on the machine with the DSL connection and Win XP Home on the other three. There is a simple five-port router and a separate DSL modem that also connects to the router. I haven't done anything special regarding firewalls unless there is some XP default in the Internet Connection Sharing that sets one up.
The only thing I haven't tried is opening the firewall ports (1755 and 8129...) because I have no clue how to do this. Can somebody help me through this part, or suggest something else? Thanks! |

I don't remember if XP pro by default turns on the firewall software. To check right click "My Network Places", goto "Properties", and then right click the "local area connection" and properties again. You then click the Advanced tab and uncheck the Internet Connection Firewall box. But I would strongly suggest using Zone Alarms software firewall, it is far superior and much eaisier to configure. also, what router are you using?, and how is your network setup. You said you had the DSL going to the XP pro computer, is it not going first to the router? Scott |
