Re: CableCard is here...

But it ISN't just a software thing. That's the point and why cablecard are considering this at all.

Once you have the hardware, people will write hacks to do what they wanna do. It won't be on the up and up, but it will happen.

LOL! He is the loop hole? Did he get homerun working and the bugs worked out? or still in development?

Back on track...I really wish the cable card would have been the key. I've been in waiting mode b/c I cannot get OTA where I live.

Re: CableCard is here...

The HDHR is working for a lot of people with his Externinator, and the BDA drivers for native BTV HDHR support look to be coming along nicely.

Yes he has the BTV Exterminator (I always think of the terminator or a bug exterminator when I type that ) working with the HDHR for unencrypted qam. It will record and functions well using BTV - but no Live TV so far. You have to record and then watch after its done.

Where are you located? If you have cable, you likely have unencrypted qam at least for your major network channels. The HDHR is a great choice and it will work with BTV even with live tv once they have the bda drivers finished. It's worth considering

Cablecard would be better since it will tune all cable channels, but I'm not sure its worth the many hoops that they require to get it. Plus, I haven't seen anyone who actually has one yet...

<off track again> IF I'm thread jacking please beat me I'm in N. California and have comcast. Hell, I'm thinking of spending some money, when I shouldn't. Does anyone have comcast and let me know if discovery is unencrypted. I know the movie channels are but I don't care about them.

<back to the thread> The cable cards look nice, seen a few pictures. just wondering how many you can actually add. Does MCE vista have a qty limitations like mce2005?

Also, wonder if HDHR can make (or will be making) a cable card version to work with XP, so I can give Vista the number 1 with the middle finger

I guess we'll see. While you can crack a specific key - the key can be revoked. The best you could hope for is to play catch up as the content provider changes the keys as and when they are broken.

naw the best you can do is spoof the key to the largest OEMer, then they really have to think before revoking it.

Re: CableCard is here...

I just found this: http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/35...work_satellite

Hell, if directtv and dish coming out with cards will be great but still don't care for the DRM. I wonder if the cable card tuner and sat cards can be ran on standard XP with someone making drivers.

Re: CableCard is here...

I still would prefer to come out of a cable (or satellite) box and into my htpc, preferably by firewire or something that sends transport streams. Considering there already are companies that modify boxes to allow decrypted content to go (in addition to unencrypted) this looks like the best solution (but definitely not the cheapest)

And of course while there may be DCMA issues, there is no copyright issue if people merely exercise their fair use rights

Now, SS needs to be able to support capture of the common signal, which of course using QAM can capture content legitimately and then SS is not doing anything wrong. Take all the decryption and content control away from the computer.

Re: CableCard is here...

Cable industry says nobody wants cablecards, whines about problems, all driven by their own interest in renting crappy old usurious set top boxes (my objective synopsis ).

Re: CableCard is here...

It's amazing how no one in the legislature has not smacked down on Cable Labs and Microsoft for such a blatant example of them both using their respective effective monopolies to stifle innovation and consumer demand.
