Video File Conversion

I'm looking of a conversion tool to take those .wmv files I've recorded with snapstream and turn em into mpeg or divx files. what would you guys reccomend? an mpeg conversion tool would be preferable since my pc is a little light on HP.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Video File Conversion

I would recommend not doing it at all. After compressing a raw video stream twice, it will likely look like complete crap.

If you REALLY need one of the other formats I would recommend:
1. Waiting for the next release of the Quartz beta which is supposed to support encoding directly to DIVX.
- or -
2. Looking at another product that will support what you are trying to do (Showshifter, WinDVR, Power VCR II, etc).

That's just my two cents.

Re: Video File Conversion

Jason,

Thanks for sharing your opinions, I understand what your saying, and being a beta tester I will get the next release of Quartz and try divx encoding. However there are a few shows that I want to convert now so I can watch them on my QCast tuner (for the PS2). I havent been able to find a program yet that can do this (although I havent look hard), I understand that it will look like shit but it's only for a short period of time and I'mm willing to look at a shitty recording. Do you know of any programs that can do this or am I *hit out of luck?

Thanks,

Compressing twice does degrade the quality but I have been getting acceptable results by recording using a user defined high quality video bitrate 3500000+ and then converting using Stoik Video Convertor using DivX 5 for the video and MP3 for the audio. (www.stoik.com) I'm still experimenting but the results are not too bad.
