SOftware encoding only. Digital TV is already digitized and compressed, i.e., encoded, so the HVR-950 just writes the program to your hard drive. Analog TV needs to be digitized and compressed so your CPU will be doing the encoding.

Yuck!

I do not think I will be buying another tuner card unless:

1) They come up with something that can encode HD MPEG2 via component

or

2) The cable card tuners get released (more likely of the two).

Is this thing going to be supported by Snapstream? I've been looking at USB ATSC tuners and at $99, this may not be a bad option.

I am Pro digital and I would mount a big honking antenna on my roof if there was a point. Unfortunatly there are only 4 digital stations in my area. I am more interested in HD for cable channels anyhow like Discovery HD, ESPN, NFL Network etc.

Are you using the antenna that came in the box, or something else?

I checked their web site and they are not listing it. Maybe they are just selling it in the stores ? I'll have to take a look this weekend.

I'm Using a Terk indoor antenna that I mounted in the attic. By the way I'm not using the HVR-950 on a laptop.

Sure enough, I had to go to two different Circuit Cities, and the second had one (just one). Snatched it up and am going to play with it this afternoon.

Re: Hauppauge's WinTV-HVR-950 hybrid ATSC / NTSC TV tuner

I'd love to hear how good (or bad) the card and the included antenna works. It's interesting because of the size and portability of this vs. the alternative.
