usb to serial adapter?

I've been looking at upgrading my motherboard and processor. The only problem I see is most motherboards now only come with one or no serial ports. Most of the new motherboards also come with limited PCI slots which my pvr cards will be occupying. Right now my system has two serial adapters that control my direct tv receivers that allows me to use my firefly remote. I also don't want to give up my firefly remote for a IR remote. I like the ability to use my RF remote anywhere in the house. That leads me to a usb to serial adapter. I was curious if anyone was using one and if they worked 100%.

Re: usb to serial adapter?

Yes and No. Some adapters will work with some devices, but in my experience not all adapters will work with all devices. It's all highly dependent on how the underlying software for the device was written.
I have probably three or four different models of adapters, and no one of them works with *every* device I have.

My suggestion is to buy from a place that allows returns and test for yourself. Popular brands that work well with a lot of stuff are the Delouo and Belkin ones (I have one of each and I like them too).

Brad.

Re: usb to serial adapter?

I use the MOXA brand of USB to Serial hubs. Works great I have 3 DirecTV Sony SAT-B55 receivers under serial control via the MOXA hub.

Their stuff is a little expensive ~$100 range, and you can't buy direct from MOXA, so happy hunting on Froogle for their products.

See their stuff here: http://www.moxa.com/product/USB_to_Serial_Hubs.htm
