HTPC Resolution Issue

I am new to the HTPC world and I have a couple of questions. Help will be greatly appreciated.
CURRENT CONFIGURATION:
-Sony KDSR60XBR1 Television
-HTPC with NVIDIA 6600 GT Video Card (DVI to HDMI Cable to TV)

I am tring to set the resolution to 1920 x 1080. When I set the video card to this resolution the display is larger than my TV display. Does someone have the same or similar configuration that can help me set this up and also get optimum quality?
Also I am very confused about the 1080i and 1080p? What is that all about?

Thanks

Re: HTPC Resolution Issue

If you go to the Nvidia properties/control panel, there should be as setting for underscan. I have a widescreen and a 4:3 HDTV, and I need to slightly underscan both so that windows doesn't spill off of the screen. I am using the 6600GT on both (one connected via component and the other with a DVI to HDMI cable)

1080I is Interlaced. What is generally used for CRT analog TVs. 1080p is Progressive. What is typically used for computer displays. Without getting into all the technical aspects it is really the way the lines on the screen are drawn. Picture a venetian blind being opened and closed. Each slat is a line. You have empty spaces between the lines. When you open and close the blinds you see the whole view .. this would be interlacing. Now take the same blinds and open the slates one at a time from top to bottom. That would be progressive. If you have a display device that is progressive (like an LCD monitor or projector etc.) then you want the video feeding it to be progressive. If the display device is interlaced (as in the common analog CRT TV) then you want the source video to also be interlaced. If you have the video reversed then you'll see wavy lines and distortion in the viewing.

I'm pretty sure this model is the first generation Sony SXRD released last year (November 2005). I bought my 50" in January - love the picture (Charter HD in Atlanta). However, the max input to the TV is 720p/1080i. This goes for both the Component and HDMI inputs. The second generation TV's just released in July 2006 (Grand Wega and XBR2 models) have the new HDMI 1.2a chipset that supports 1080p. Bummer for HTPC and Blu-Ray fans.
