New TV

I need some help picking out a new TV for my living room. I would like to spend less than $3,000 US including tax, shipping and accessories. I would like something over 50 inches and I do not nessicarily require something that is wall mountable (but it would be neat). I really want something that is full 1080p so that I can go 1920x1080 out from my DVI-D on my video card. I also need a combination of 2 HDMI ports or 1 HDMI and 1 DVI-D. If I could have a combination giving me uo to 3 digital inputs that would be even better, but probably hard to find. I have looked at the projection LCD TVs and the flat panel LCDs and both look good. I like the projection models because they seem to have really great brightness. My livingroom gets a lot of sun in the afternoon so the bright screen is important. I have a great reciever and speaker set up so the speakers on the TV are not important. One of the TVs I saw in person and really liked was this one:

I would hope to get reccomendations from anyone who has some experience picking screens, or maybe someone who works with TVs who has some information. Any ideas?

You seem to have a really good handle on the technology so you need to research the manufacturer's websites and go from there.

Personally I would not go with projection of any sort, LCD, DLP,etc. The future is going to be a battle between flat LCDs and plasma. Wait another 6 months in my opinion. I have my eye on the 58" Panasonic plasma but it's $7500 cdn. Flat LCDs are getting larger as time goes on and LCD is everywhere so the price should come down more in a few months.

Re: New TV

50" (55, 60 are available) Sony SXRD, SXRD is the only RPTV you should be considering if you want the best pic for the price at that size. Everything has problems that affect PQ.

Re: New TV

One warning on any kind of projection TV. The bulbs last around 3000 hours and they can get expensive to replace. If size and weight is not important to you, I would see what you can find as far as a CRT. Not sure they make them any bigger than 42" though.

Re: New TV

So no one would reccomend DLPs? They seem to be hyping those for the price right now. I guess I will keep my eyes open for a good flat panel LCD.

Thanks!

Re: New TV

I think it depends what you want to do and how long you want to have the tv. DLP is good tv in the short run. Technology is changing so fast right now, I am not sure what is the best way to go...which is one of the reasons I am waiting to buy a new tv.

I agree about waiting. I've been looking the past couple months and even though everybody claims they're having a sale I could swear there is a slight price increase becuase the football season is starting!

Re: New TV

Around Christmas and the Boxing week sales should have some *better* deals. As time passes the Sony Bravia line should eventually have larger screens.

Re: New TV

My brother in law works for Sony and he gets an employee discount (5% above cost) so I guess I am going to get their high end DLP (SXRD). I will just go with the 50" for now at a great price and hope it lasts a while.
