ATI has a lot of experience with TV output. I should have went this route instead of the GeForce card I got.

Re: Best video card for CRT TV setup?

I would just go get the RGB (DB-15) to RCA/S Video converter. It would be easiest and give the best conversion without needing to tweak drivers. The problem with video out on a video card is that they never line up on the TV right.

Re: Best video card for CRT TV setup?

Hi
I saw this thread while searching in google for a way to improve picture quality to CRT TV through s-Video .

I have Nvidia 8600GT connected to 32" CRT TV. the picture quality is not sharp as the one comes from a regular satellite box !

ClamsTheCat:
I found an item in eBay that looks to connect VGA to s-Video. Is this what you'r talking about:
http://cgi.ebay.com/2-VGA-DB15-Male-...QQcmdZViewItem

-will it work with my nvidia ? or should I switch to another Video card such as ATI ?

thanks and regards.

Re: Best video card for CRT TV setup?

Sorry but that adapter isn't going to work. A composite video signal (yellow connector) isn't a signal found in a VGA 15-pin output from a video card, nor is the S-video.

Plus that cable has red and white connectors for left and right audio, so that cable is for a specific device of some sort that happened to use a VGA 15-pin connector in a non-standard way.

Also, I've had many Nvidia and ATI cards and none of them offered the composite or S-video signals using an adapter like this. Instead they come out of a different connector.

You can find an inexpensive ATI card for either AGP or PCIe slot with S-video out. That's your best bet.

Re: Best video card for CRT TV setup?

thanks for replay
I know now that this cable will not work for me.
I did an extensive search and find out that even a scan converter will not give a sharp picture in my TV.

scan converters are like this one:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...y=REVIEWS#tabs

and this

others can be found in this page:
http://www.datapro.net/catalog/vga-v...onvertors.html

Howerver, as you said , I read somewhere that ATI 3870 will give the level of picture quality I need through s-Video.
I'm going to do some search to confirm this.

Thanks and Regards

Re: Best video card for CRT TV setup?

Forget about all that stuff.

Go to your Nvidia control panel, look for "flicker filter" and move the slider almost all the way to the left.

Then go to video enhancement tab and move the video sharpening slider a bit to the right.

These two things really cleared up my svideo connection to my TV and looks just as good as a DVD pllayer conected to the TV.

I have an older 7600GT card

Re: Best video card for CRT TV setup?

I could not find any option for "flicker filter".
"Video enhancemt" option is disabled !

howerver when I changed the default mpeg decoder in my application the picture look fantastic. It is now almost as good as a standalone dvb player !

But still there is only one problem:
when there is action in the video such as: hand moving , or football(soccer) game then picture becomes somehow blurry and the quality drops down !!

Is it because mpeg decoder ? I'm using "Avermedia mpeg decoder". How can I use Nvidia Hardware acceleration ?
or may be this nature for s the s-video output ?

Re: Best video card for CRT TV setup?

First, check your recording quality setting. You need to be on Best DVD Ready to get the highest quality setting which should minimize motion blur.

Also make sure Hardware Acceleration is enabled in the Web Admin.

Finally, try each mpeg decoder you have installed. I find the default Snapstream decoder works best for me but at different times with my system I've used other ones depending on the driver and the video card I was using.
