Re: Are you planning to upgrade to Microsoft Vista?

can anyone tell me if Vista will

1) allow me to record 5C QAM (presumably with a cable card equipped tuner card)

AND

2) stream these shows to networked media players (like the Zensonic)
and would the Zensonic need some new security function to play it?

I'm NOT asking for Snapstream's business strategy here, just asking what is and is not possible with the coming intersection of Vista and the cable industry

edit: a little research and i answered my own question

1) yes, called OCUR and only available with new PC's running Vista that are approved by cablelabs
2) in theory yes, not sure what devices will support this or when

so in summary, it looks like Vista will be the only way to get cable QAM other than the few unencrypted channels.
i assume BTV will have to build something on top of Vista and will be competing with the Vista's own version of MCE.
i'll probably still go with Vista and BTV (but you can't be TOO FAR behind Vista's comparable offering folks)

I voted yes because at least one of my machines will have to be upgraded. If the question was will I upgrade my BTV system to the answer will be no.

Re: Are you planning to upgrade to Microsoft Vista?

My main ssytem, yes. Unfortunatly with DRM and trusted computing, atleast one system in my house has to access the new DRM/TC world. Another thing that *MAY* compel me to vista my HTPC is the new sound support, isntead of 16 bit proccessing, it offers 32 bit floating point, so vista is supposed to see a noticible audio fidelity increase, down side is atleast initaly there will be no hardware accelerated sound support <downsde for me since i will soon ahve teh creative X-Fi on my htpc> but if crystal still works... the clencher will be two HDD's ill boot a fully set up vista, fully setup xp, and play my music. which ever sounds better will get to stay. I can sacrafice video, but my audio suffers for no one lastly my main system was designed for games, and m$ will never release dx10 for xp, so for the coninued life of my main pc, vistawill be installed, my only hope si they make good on the upgrade promis for those of us who built x64 systems recently had had to by oem xp because that was all that was available. but the layout of my house XP Prox2 2kProx1 VistaRC1x1, Kubuntu x1 and windows 3.11/95 OSR2x1. The final thing is that at somepoint, software that does not "Obey" DRM requirements can be blacklisted and or just not work well with TC software, or even not be able to play protected content. I see this having a huge impact on my HTPC that i am not lookin forward too.

Re: Are you planning to upgrade to Microsoft Vista?

There would need to be a really significant reason for me to upgrade. So far have not seen it.

Lots of problems with the latest rollup of Vista [CORRECTION XP NOT VISTA] MCE. Much of it is related to DRMMMMMM

I just read the article. You mean XP MCE? Or is your Vista reference tongue-in-cheek?

Re: Are you planning to upgrade to Microsoft Vista?

My bad, should've posted outside of this thread.

It does show the difficulties DRM gives M$ and the users of the product. I think the Vista MCE version will have the same problems as they continue to battle with DRM.

Re: Are you planning to upgrade to Microsoft Vista?

I might have to change my vote since I'm not sure I will be able to avoid the inevitable (which SS and other companies seem to be pushing us to). I have tried Vista RC1 and while I am not in love with the interface it has "everything" and just works. Given that it will have HD-DVD support, extenders, and probably a lot of 3rd-party development it might not be such a bad option after all...

Re: Are you planning to upgrade to Microsoft Vista?

We're planning to support Vista in the near future -- it's probably going to be the priority after Beyond TV 4.5 launches.

Yeah!!! BM ignored again even though Brett will post something about big plans in the future that he can't talk about. The reason he can't talk about them is because they don't exist.

First I don't see why both supporitng vista and integration would be mutually exclusive.

Second you're out of bounds implying that Brett is lying.

Re: Are you planning to upgrade to Microsoft Vista?

I have found that BeyondTV works even better in Vista that it does on XP. I have a dual-monitor setup, and while in XP I had to set my TV output to be the primary to get HW Acceleration, this is no longer the case in Vista since the entire desktop is accelerated . That is reason enough for me to upgrade.
I have been using vista for a couple months now, and simply could not go back to XP if you paid me. I know just about eveything could be achieved with add-ons and plug-ins, but I really love the serch cabapility everywhere and the gadgets and the new media player and the improved networking, and Windows Defender, and the large number of embedded anti-virus technologies, and photo management. I have found that it manages resources better than XP, so background tasks like showsqueeze run better.

To each his own.
