Sound jimmy-riggin' question

I was fooling around with beyond tv today and noticed you can change the sound to 5.1. I have a 4.1 system that uses the front and rear channels from the sound card (black and green 1/8" minijacks so to speak), but not the center/sub jack on my soundcard. This is probably a bad idea, so I figured I'd ask before I did it: can I couple the c/sub and front 1/8" mini plugs and plug them both into the 'Front' connector on my sub? Will I blow stuff up doing so? Will it not make any difference?
