Whats the difference between WMV and DIVX

What's all the hype about DIVX being a must have format for BTV?

I've tried showsqueezing to both format and, to me, there is no difference in quality. 100% of what I record is showsqueezed to WMV. 99.99% of what I record is deleted seconds after I watch the entire thing, so why would I care what format it is? Should I care?

No you shouln't care.

But others have reasons to: They may want to use the resulting video on another machine, such as a DIvX certified DVD player, a PMP, or such.

Then others swear that the quality is better (I don't see it) and some just don't want to use because it's Microsoft.

I agree, a lot of people don't like it because its from Microsoft.

I looked at it while ago and it seemed that WMV took more resources to play WMV than divx. However, for me its cheaper (and less hassle) to buy a bigger HDD and not use compression. Its just one less thing my system has to do.

As we run XP on all our home systems, I much prefer WMV...no need to install DivX codecs...playback in WMP is very good (with a little tweak'n on the slower PCs).
