Hi...all
Before you say anything I purchased snapstream in late may 2002 and love the software, but I am not above trying anything else. The networking of SS feature is not my mine interest. Therefore I look from time to time at other software. SHOWSHIFTER (SS only real competition)- has released it new finalized version of its PVR version 1.70 . Apparently they fixed most if not all the bugs the previous version had and it works great with ATI AIW cards and ATI remote controls. This program has Divx encoding through conversion if I am not mistaken. I used it a long time ago, But a couple of friends have it and like it. It a good program but I prefer Snapstream 3.0 QUARTZ edition. Whenever it gets released... which is hopefully w/i the next 2 - 3 weeks at the latest. {{fingers-crossed}} Just thought you'd all like to know since I've since some postings about it. |

I have to ask, then why did you get it? I'm noticing a lot of of folks praising the superiority of showshifter lately but they seem to be missing the point. I got snapstream because I have a TV server in my basement server room. It is not the machine I sit in front of to work. I barely ever touch it physically. *No* other product fills this gap for me, and does it well. Snapstream is all about IP-TV, whereas other applications are just about running on the same machine you plan to view material on. So the showshifter vs. snapstream arguments are moot, no? Just my 5 bucks. - Matt PS - dying for Quartz |

Depends... I also have a TV server stuck away that I do not touch.
But for what I use it for either product works fine for me, which makes the comparison at least reasonable. Mainly because I do not like, or use, the streaming capability in Snapstream. If you use that, it is a different story. I simply made a shortcut to the folder containing the PVR stores on my remote machines. Then to watch a show, I simply double click on the video file itself. That way I can fast forward and rewind (like when skipping commercials) without having to rebuffer like you do when streaming. So I guess it all depends on how you use the product. ShowShifter does support the streaming and web interface features you love so much about SnapStream, but it's a third party product (free of course). Because the API changed in 1.7, they needed to re-write it, so they are a bit behind - but there is a beta version out that gives you basic functionality. Doesn't look as good as SnapStream though (for the moment) |

True, PBMax. The current version doesn't.
But if you read the read.me on what is being worked on, streaming is included. However, no reason why you can't just stream straight out of your \Video directory. Live Streaming though is another kettle of fish. |

I imagine that with the ShowShifter API and the release of Freestyle will lead to developments that will easily surpass the glacier pace of SnapStream development. Perhaps Quartz will be exceptional and provide a fantastic feature set.
