New version of windows gets a name

Just in case you don't read the blog...

The OS formerly codenamed Longhorn is now "Windows Vista"!

Re: New version of windows gets a name

I prefer (as reported in the blog) "Windows Monthly Security Patch Edition". At least the name would tell me what I'm getting.

Re: New version of windows gets a name

Actually my Linux box and Windows box get about the same number. I guess it's not a fair comparison though since I can only tell on the systems that BTV are on as to what Windows gets.

Re: New version of windows gets a name

I think a system that doesnt receive updates often should be the system that is shunned. To me updates are like saying, "We work hard to make sure you're safe and up to date."

And "vi", as we all know, is the most evil text editor ever written, devised specifically to make your life an unending nightmare. Therefore, Windows = Evil! O.M.G! (Seriously, vi really is evil. /s/c:\\foo\\x.txt//c:\\bar\\y.txt/g to do a simple search and replace? grr.)

Regardign windows updates, I was really only joking a little. I'd rather have the updates than not have them. It would be nice to not need them at all, but thats just not too realistic unfortunately. Too many bad people out there wanting to do bad things -- eventually they'll find a way.

So?

Make BeyondTV run in *Linux*. THAT would be something to get excited about.

Why? I know a few people who have this type of attitude, and I have worked with Linux a little, but I don't see the appeal. What are some good features that are soley on Linux?

I've worked with Linux in my day job for about 5 years and have done quite a bit of video editing in it at home...

Here's what I like, off the top of my head, and in no particular order.

1) Cost - I can buy one copy of SuSE Professional and install it on as many machines as I want.

2) Security - you don't have worry about your DVR being turned into a spambot or worse if you're running Linux. The average time to infect a new XP box connected to the web is under 10 minutes. Out of the box, most Linux versions are more secure than Windows, if for no other reason that they're not *infected* with Internet Exploder and Outlook Express.

3) Stability/robustness - for many reasons, it's more reliable.

4) Configuration - Linux in general is far more configurable than Windows. And you can *easily* remove what you don't need. No web browers are "part of the OS" as in Windows.

5) Ease of use - SuSE Professional is *easier* to configure and manage on a day-to-day basis than Windows (with it's YaST tool wich is combination device manger, add/remove wizard, and auto update among many other functions).

6) Performance - I've seen 700 MHz machines runing Linux play full screen DivX files that choked faster machines runing Win2K. Linux is a *great* OS for media.

7) No "drive letter" nonsense! :-> OK, that's a pet peeve, not a valid reason.

8) Support. Who supports Linux? Novell. Intel. HP. IBM. Adaptec. Nvidia. Etc.

Going back to cost - XP Pro is pretty much required these days if you're going to run a Microsoft OS. Compare the $$$ of XP Pro to the $59 for a SuSE Professional Upgrade (which is exactly the same as the "full" minus the dead-tree manuals, which are included as PDF files, and even first time users can buy the "upgrade", unlike with Microsoft).
