Forgent sues companies for DVR patent infringement

I was just curious if anyone had seen this and if Snapstream had been named:

http://ir.forgent.com/ireye/ir_site....item_id=730269

The description is rather vague and the whole suit seems odd since they're going after the providers rather than the manufacturers...

*sigh*

Another emblematic representation of the screwed up litigious society the US has created.

If they go for SS they'll have to go for microsoft too.

They only mention the Providers -- as they are the "Big Names" who are using PVR technology... but they also mention software makers as well -- including MS -- in another article

Presumably they're only interested in the big bucks and the big names? (looking at their past litigation history).

Fly low under the radar

Why innovate when you can litigate!

That's pretty funny... Their stock trades under $2 and is going down.... They'll go out of business first.

Re: Forgent sues companies for DVR patent infringement

Wonder why they haven't named Tivo in there also????

This is an example why some patents are way too broad.

My personal view on a patent is that it must be able to be backed by specifics like technical diagrams of a working unit/Schematics/blueprints.

Just the "idea" shouldn't be patentable. The *implementation* should be.

How can you reverse engineer an idea without a product attached to it? This stifles innovation, imho....

Notice, nobody patented the idea of putting 4 wheels on a box and calling it a wagon... yet it's carried through to the automobile, but portions OF that automobile are patented inventions! That makes overall sense to me, not basing your company on Intellectual property licensing, but on an actual PRODUCT.

Re: Forgent sues companies for DVR patent infringement

My question is.....Who would think that opening a file for output while it is open for input is patentable?

There's nothing, not in common usage, there. This kind of stuff has got to stop.
