Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

I'm planning to record the Live 8 concert broadcast in its entirety and I'm wondering what approach I should use. I guess we're beyond the 2GB file size issues these days, but eight hours at DVD Best quality would probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of 13GB total.

Anyone have personal experience to share with extended recording? Should I go ahead and break it up into several different manual recordings?

Cheers,
Bryan

BTV should break the recording into a new chunk at 4 gig automatically if i'm not mistaken.... (but I have been wrong before)

I don't think its an issue if your using NTFS. I know I've done long recordings resulting in single files in that range. I'm pretty sure I've seen other people post that if your still using FAT then it will auto break them at the 4GB mark.

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

IF you are planing to put it on DVD you will have to cut it . I would cut it at 2 hr pers DVD with commercials . Sometimes when I cut mpeg2 the audio gets out of sync so I do not cut commercials . IF you can cut commercials out without problems then I would record all 8 hrs straight . 8hrs = 6 hrs without commercials .

6 hrs per DVD is almost max you can do and have a little quality at 720x480 . I noticed the PVR 150 does better at 720x480 at 1689KBs total audio and video than at 352x480 1689KBs total A+V . 1689KBS is almost 5hrs per DVD and is the lowest watchable to me . 6hrs is 1370KBS way to low for mpeg2 720x480 . VCD is 1150kbs at 352x240 mpeg1 . Mpeg1 is better than Mpeg2 at those bitrates but we can not do mpeg1 in BTV .

It doesn't do this on my system- using WinXP SP2 and NTFS.

I recorded 8 hours of Glastonbury straight off last week- resulted in a single 21Gb file. Played fine with no glitches or sync problems.

I didn't try squeezing it- would have taken hours, and I only wanted to do a "time-shift"!

Thanks, that's just the sort of example I was looking for, but I'm curious what picture quality setting you were using? 21GB seems quite a bit larger than I would expect.

Also curious about Glastonbury. There didn't seem to be much in the lineup that appealed to me, but maybe I'm just getting too old. :-) How was the BBC coverage -- any depth?

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

I record at "Best- DVD ready" at 7224kbps which equates to just under 3Gb per hour. BBC 3 carried uninterupted all day coverage (2pm till 2am) with excellent sound and visual quality.

The actual "Source Sound" often left a lot to be desired though! At least the sets were more than 15minutes.

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

I went ahead and bought another external drive just to keep from worrying about how much drive space I was going to tie up with the Live 8 recording. Thanks for the headsup on file size, I don't usually pay much attention to that.

As I guessed, the MTV coverage is just a constant stream of soundbites and I'm sure BBC will do a much better job covering Live 8. Luckily I figured out how to grab the AOL streams so I can at least see everything in webcast quality. I still haven't tested to see how they look on my TV using Beyond Media, but at least the audio seems to be good.

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

Did anyone manage to get the whole second part of the BBC broadcast? I used my Nebula DigiTV. I set it to record the entire transport stream (with plenty of disk space at the ready, I do mean plenty) but it only recorded the one channel

If you have the full second part in perfect quality (ie. perfect reception, no dropped frames or PCI bus transfer problems) I (and hundreds - if not thousands or more - of other people) would really love to get hold of it in the MPEG2 format (MPEG2 is already a compressed video format and suitable for DVD). You could share it using bitorrent, you only need broadband, you can PM me if you don't already know what Bitorrent is and wish to learn more.

I have the first bit so if you happened to lose that I am more than happy to share that bit (currently cutting it and getting rid of wimbledon). If me and someone who got the second bit can come together I'm sure we can make a lot of people happy, and I could even spend some time putting DVD images together with menus etc etc.

If you shared it you'd make me and lots more people across the world happy. Unfortunately it won't help Africa, but it will help the message be spread to those who missed it on the TV.

Thanks for the pointer. I was already aware of the site and - Unfortunately this is *not* in MPEG2 format unfortunately. Yes I can watch it but can't put it on a DVD. I'm looking for a DVB-T MPEG2 rip, which I'm sure someone has. A webcast or highly compressed copy doesn't really cut the mustard unfortunately. I came across this forum from a Google search for "Live 8" OR live8 MPEG2.

I'm looking for the MPEG2. This can easily be shared over the internet using bitorrent. Even if the file is over 10gb and you only have a 256kb/s up speed, it will just take a good few days and nights. Trust me lots and lots of people will be looking for this and will be eternally grateful

Or if you have it in perfect quality and could mail me a copy on DVD-R of the UK (Hyde Park) BBC coverage (only all the second part on BBC1 is needed) hopefully I can make it worth your effort. But we'll see if someone's willing to make a torrent first

Pls someone :bowd own:

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

I might have been able to do this, apart from the fact that the concert ran 150minutes over time!

We were out on Saturday night, and so set BTV to record the BBC1 portion, and added a generous 1hour extra time; unfortunately that wasn't enough!

BTW- your "specification" for your file requirements might suggest to a cynic that you are trying to produce some sort of semi-commercial copy, which is against BBC copyright rules.

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

No just looking for a decent watchable copy with decent audio - and have a bit of a pet hate for highly compressed video and audio. I guess a high bitrate DivX with the original audio might be good - but MPEG2 would need no conversion to play on a DVD player. AFAIK the BBC would say you aren't even allowed to record it with a VHS video recorder so my understanding is merely recording it is supposedly against the law?!

I would buy the official DVD instead if it was out, but like with Live Aid, I think it will be a while before A DVD comes out and it will most likely be all on one disc in a new format like blue ray or something.

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

The BBC do allow recording for personal use, but I take your point.

Unfortunately, the gremlins got into my Live 8 recording- started at 7pm when we went out, and finished at 9.30 (for some reason the "extra padding" did not work, presumably operator error), but the middle hour is full of MTV2 rubbish, as one of my sons ignored the "Recording- don't mess" notice on the cable box!

Re: Advice for recording ALL of Live 8 (eight hours)?

FYI - at first I had trouble watching my captured streams using Beyond Media, but then I changed the file extensions from .wmv to .asf and they work fine in BM.

The files are 320x240, 468kbps. They look and sound very good for a webcast, and I'm still enjoying watching them on my TV (working my way through all 8 hours of each show!). I'm very impressed with AOL and their handling of the webcasts.

Cheers,
Bryan
