help me make the quietest HTPC

hi all,

i already have BTV working fine, but i'm getting married and moving so i want something more civilized than a loud and noisy computer to run BTV.

i plan on keeping my current BTV setup in the closet and using it as a server. I plan on using BTV link in the bedroom and living room.

can anyone help me out designing a really quiet HTPC with enough power to watch streaming TV, videos and music? i don't need anything more than that. thanks

oh and this is starting from scratch, i need a case, mobo, cpu... etc.

Re: help me make the quietest HTPC

Have you considered using the Hauppauge MVP with the BTV skin for the link machines? - 100% silent and would seem to fulfill your requirements. The only real downside is that the units do not feel as responsive as a fully fledged link PC but are certainly much cheaper!

Re: help me make the quietest HTPC

check out what VIA is getting ready to roll out. The C7 processor seems like the ideal choice for htpc.

The c3 processor is available now but I'm holding out for the C7.

Re: help me make the quietest HTPC

I recently purchased a PC for the bedroom which is quieter than my notebook. I run BTV link on it and it works perfectly. The only thing I added was a video card with S-Video out. I put a firefly on it and the wife loves it.

The whole computer was $300 from Geeks.com. Drum roll please....

Its an HP Pavillion 2.8GHz with 512Meg RAM.

Re: help me make the quietest HTPC

You can stream live TV via the MVP to a limited extent. After changing channels, it will play for as long as your timeshift buffer is and then stop. At this point to need to re-select the channel again. Whilst not perfect, a large 3 hour buffer will normally do the trick.

Re: help me make the quietest HTPC

If you are going to go down this route, probably a good idea to have a good read through the MVP main thread (if you have not already done so), just so you are 100% aware of what the MVP can and cannot do:

[closed] [addon] MediaMVP w/BTV (Apr 5 Update)
