Athlon Xp without a fan?

Hi i currently have a amd athlon 2.4+ running at 1.8ghz i think anyway i have a zalman flower and fan but it is still too noisy, just wondered if anyone knew if it was possible to run my cpu without a fan and only a heatsync?

I wouldnet be bothered if i have to lower the cpu speed either as long as it does not effect htpc performance....

Re: Athlon Xp without a fan?

they do sell a fanless kit (basically it's a really tall heatsink) but I'm not sure how well it works without some sort of case-fan airflow. your probably better off trying a variable fan (only kicks in if the machine is really working, like recording multiple shows). Mine is fairly quiet.. that or you could spend like $150 on a water-cooler kit.

Re: Athlon Xp without a fan?

you've got a zalman flower, with the 90mm fan that's on a bracket/arm hovering above the heatsink, right? Do you have the resisitor in place to slow the fan down? I kinda doubt this is what you're hearing, you're probably hearing your power supply or your video card. Does your motherboard chipset have a fan on it? Those are usually noisy too.

yeh i have the flower with the bracket, and the fanmate set to the lowest setting...

my psu is a silent zalman psu and i can be right next to it and hear nothing, there are no fans on the mb chipset or graphics card ...

The noise is from the fan dont get me wrong its not loud but can be heard from 5m away, maybe its faulty

ive actually got the standby/wake to work now so its not as much of an issue i just resented having fan noise even when i wasnt using the pc...

Re: Athlon Xp without a fan?

I've got the same CPU heatsink here, and I can't hear it at all. I've got the slightly older zalman 300w power supply, it's supposedly a bit noiser than the 400w models, different fans perhaps. What I hear most is the fan on the geforce3 that's in there. The 90mm fan that came with the CPU heatsink is very quiet, perhaps you're right and yours might be faulty. Or you could just be more sensitive to those frequencies than I am, too.
