Re: Thumbs up for Nvidia's new DVD decoder

By the way, anybody who is having any issues with this decoder (version 1.00.58 or 1.00.67), you can also go to this thread on the AVS forum:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=460212

A lot of issues, configurations, and bugs have been discussed there.

Re: Thumbs up for Nvidia's new DVD decoder

I was just about to edit my CustomSettings.xml for the nVidia decoder when I noticed that I already have an entry in there with a filter name of "NVIDIA Video Decoder". The one already in there has a GUID value of 212DC710-3235-44A4-BD29-E1652BBCC71C. Can anyone tell me what that one is for?

I have a fresh install of BTV 3.5.1, so presumably this entry came with the install. Thanks.

Tom

That's for NvDVD 2.55 and earlier.

I tried that GUID however still no sound in Beyond Medio unless I use another decoder. I want to get the NVidia sound working as I plan to get the advanced sound pack version of the NVidia decoders, just don't want to purchase them if we can't get sound in Beyond Media.
I have purchased the Platinum pack and unfortunately 5.1 audio (through 5.1 analog direct connection to speakers) with the nvidia decoder will only work with Windows Media Player and Media Center, all other applications will not be able to use the Dobly / DTS Decoder with 5.1 speakers (this include Beyond Media). Apparently this is because of licensing problems...

The only way to output 5.1 with nvidia decoder in Beyond Media is to use S/PDIF passthrough to an external receiver and thus the receiver will decode Dolby and DTS

OR

use S/PDIF passthrouhg with an Audigy 2ZS card (or any sound card with built in Dolby / DTS Decoder) and activate the built in Dolby / DTS Decoder of the card. Then you will not use a S/PDIF cable to your receiver but a 5.1 direct analog connection.

Regards,
Stéphane.

Sadly this is correct. I too am waiting with anticipation for the audio support primarily within Beyond Media though.

Don't think it will happen; if I understand correctly (from the nvidia DVD decoder KB) this is a Dolby licensing issue... Seriously this is becoming pathetic : I'm sure we are already paying Dolby license for Speakers, DVD, DVD Decoders, Sound card... they want obviously more

That said, I was not very impressed by the advanced audio features of the nvidia dvd platinum... especially with Prologic II.

So this is currently what I am doing :

* use direct analog connection from my Audigy (1) to Logitech Z5500 speakers
* use built in AC3 Dolby Digital decoder of the Audigy
* configured the nvidia decoder to use S/PDIF passthrough
* configured audigy drivers to use CMSS (a weak upmixing algorithm used for stereo sources)

If find it more easy to use this way, because :

* You can change sound effect directly on the speaker (and thus disabling Creative CMSS for a real Prologic II)
* You can use volume control on your PC (with real S/PDIF passthrough you couldn't, and I hate to have to play with 4 volumes controls : one on the speakers, one for the main volume, one for the wave volume, one for the application, and I hate to have to tell the wife : hmmm when you play a DVD be sure to use this remote to lower the volume, then use this remote to start playing the DVD... )
* You can have 5.1 sound in games or WMV HD / WM

Or wait for a soundstorm PCI sound card but I'm afraid of some issues like: how the upmixing is done and why...

Regards,
Stéphane.

Re: Thumbs up for Nvidia's new DVD decoder

Don't know what I did wrong but, I did get audio to work with BTV. The picture is not that much better for me than intervideo drivers, and the cpu is about 10% pts higher.

I tried most of the settings here, doesn't seem to make a difference.

Re: Thumbs up for Nvidia's new DVD decoder

Yes you get audio didn't mean to give that impression. But the audio isn't being decoded with the Nvidia Audio decoders, which for SD TV is fine and this really won't be a major benefit till later. It's in Beyond Media that its important since BM handles your DVD playback.

Try either the 67.03 or 67.77 Forceware drivers...they seem optimized to work with the Nvidia decoder. I see about 10-15% cpu usage in 3D mode @720x480 recording profile. But with other Forceware drivers, it's more like 45-55% (!)

Re: Thumbs up for Nvidia's new DVD decoder

That makes sense about the sound, I couldn't figure out why everyone liked it so much if the sound wasn't working

I tried 67.03 and 67.77, the only one that's stable for me under a load is 67.66.

The Intervideo decoders are giving 5-15% with decent picture quality. I think I'd have to get a 6000 series to get a better picture & a big screen HDTV .. LOL
