Re: What kind of home network do you have?

I've got a Netgear 802.11G router with 4 100MBit ports. One of them is uplinked to a 5port GigE switch where everything is connected.

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

It is actually a mixed network. I have 802.11b for workstations in my kids rooms as that part of the house was not possible to wire. The rest uses 100Mbit with 1000Mbit backbone between floors.

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

I usu a combination of 100Mb, 802.11g, and HPNA for the outlying parts of the home. Interesting that HPNA gets knocked alot, but it works a hella lot better than wireless does. There's been a 100mb standard for over a year now, but it will never be implimented because it's not as 'cool' as wireless, even though it's 100% reliable. Oh well.

Home powerline / homeplug is a similar story -- it's not wireless, but it's really effective. But wireless is more than just 'cool' -- it's just a much better paradigm for home networking, it's so much easier.

it would be interesting to see also - for those that use a wireless medium ; what performance they get streaming video correlated to number of devices sharing that wireless frequency.

Collisions in wireless domain can totally drop the bandwidth - even the microwave or cordless phone can shaft a 802.11b or g network when in use.

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

Ethernet 100 Mbit/s and Wireless (802.11g)
But I don't have the wireless turned on as I don't have any need for it at the moment. The router was only a couple bucks extra over the regular one so I figured why not just get it.

Dequire, how fast do you download stuff from the internet? I have always been curioused about HPNA, but have never really experimented. My wife's computer is now wireless because there was no way to run an eithernet cable to the room with her computer.

I've never timed / clocked it, but it does connect at a hard 10MB, so for general email / gaming / audio streaming, etc. it's plenty fast. It is not fast enough for BTV video streaming on LAN using link at best quality. There, wireless G or 100 is better.

I use the Linksys HPRO200 HPNA 10MB, 10/100MB Ethernet Cable DSL Router / switch. It's great for hybrid networks.

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

I have a varied hybrid network setup at home myself...

I have:

1 - 802.11b wireless access point/repeater - (laptop surfing and Wireless access, especially for PocketPC)
1 - 4 port 10 mbit HUB (For data sniffing purposes, idle)
1 - 5 port 10/100 switch - Clarkconnect box, 1 Desktop and Xbox attached to this, uplinked to 10mbit HUB and 8 port switch
1 - 8 port 10/100 switch - Vonage broadband phone adapter, Second server NIC connection, BTV box, 1 desktop, as well as spare port for TiVo, uplinked to 5 port switch and Gigabit switch, and Access Point
1 - 5 port Gigabit switch - 3 desktops wired in for Gigabit + 1 server port, uplinked to 8 port switch

All behind a Clarkconnect linux firewall box. I'll never use my Linksys AP/Router again.

Talk about a mess of cables!

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

well, i have a wireless router 11g upstairs in the main bedroom, and my mian TV with BTV is downstairs, connected via a usb 11b network connector... I was originally goign to use 11g for my main computer upstairs and 11g for my work laptop, but did not like occasionally drop out and perfomance lag.. (I thinkt here' something in my air) So now I have a ethernet cord draped on the ground from the bedroom down the hall to the computer room..... which leads to switch, to share between 2 computers and my work laptop (I can't do real "work" away from a desk)

I really want to wire the BTV, but my fiancee doesn't want another wire floating around the house (don't blame her) and I'm too lazy(and little nervous) to punch holes in my new house.. I dunno why I didn't get the wired network when this house was built... Doh!

If I had the extra cash, the wireless would be nice for a laptop to float around the house...

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

I have a 100/Mbit switch that my cable router hooks up to, and 2 of my machines have direct access to the net that way. Thats connected to my DLink 802.11g wireless router that has the 104Mbit firmware upgrade. My laptops all have 104Mbit wireless cards now too, and even though its a software compression it really performs quite well.

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

I had 100 MB before moved 2nd computer . Now have Super-G Blitzz 108Mbs . I had to downgrade to 54mbs for linux compatibilty on MadWiFi drivers for Atheros 5412 chipset . They are in testing and fixing right now . My 2 computer network multi boots linux and windows .

They play mpeg2 or wmv or divix over network drive fine .

Re: What kind of home network do you have?

I also have a mixed network, most of the PC's are on the 1GB segment of the network.

Wired - 1GB Segment using 2x Linksys Gigabit 8-Port Workgroup Switchs
Wireless - 802.11g Segment using 1 x Apple Airport Extreme, 1 x Apple Airport Express

I was planning on using a tablet PC (HP tc1100) with a 802.11g card and BTV Link, but currently it is too choppy.
