very weird..
I have for some time now never been able to use hardware deinterlacing on btv, if i did enable it, i would get about 80% cpu and jerky and stuttering playback. have just lived with using software deinterlacing. and 70-80 cpu usage.
Well last night, i installed sagetv.... i know i know.... sorry. while nice PQ, and has some features that i would like to see in btv, sage is a little barren in some areas. I was shocked to see live tv playback was using hardware deinterlacing, and ... only 20$-30% cpu! i was perplexed...so i fire up btv/live tv, and yup, 80% cpu... and then .... i tried something that has never worked before... i turned on hardware deinterlacing. and BAM! PQ was great, not jerk or stutter... and BTV is now using 20-30 cpu.... I am using a p4 2.4, prv250, xp, a fx5200, and 340something megs of ram... Part of me wishes that sage and btv would merge, from what i have seen of sage so far, i like some of their ideas, but sage is missing some of the features that btv has.... and btv is missing some of the features that sage has... |

Re: very weird..
that is what's so weird....
before i installed sage: BTV using HW deinterlacing on my fx5200 was not possible, cpu 80% utilization and video playback was jerky and not very good. After in installed sage: BTV using HW deinterlacing on my fx5200 20% cpu, and smooth video playback, a very nice PQ also. I wonder what sage did to my system? what reg settings did it tweek, because now BTV is working even better than before! |

Re: very weird..
Bryce,
You da man! I was searching the forums looking for any new tips that might help with the constant stuttering that occurs with my setup. WinTV 250, ATI 9800 Pro P4 2.8, 80 Gig hard drive. I thought, what the heck, I'll install the sage trial. After installing and configuring, I wasn't really impressed with the Sage picture, it was sort of "Motion picturish" on my news channels if you know what I mean. But on BTV, the stuttering has stopped! The picture is very clear. But mostly to get rid of the "trails" every time someone is running or raises a hand makes this process worthwile. Not sure what they've done to tweak the settings though...

Re: very weird..
I tried running regmonitor.exe when I installed Sage today, but it quit running before the install completed (or I forgot to turn it on), but I was hoping to come up with a reg hack to share.

Installing Sage definately changed the behavior of the way DXVA works in BTV. It used to be that if I enabled DXVA, CPU usage would skyrocket. Now it goes lower as it should. HW deinterlace is still pretty choppy. It seems I can use one or the other, but not both at the same time. I wish BTV handled DXVA and HW deinterlace like Sage...it just looks perfect, and CPU usage is around 9-12%. Otherwise, BTV just has so much more than it's counterpart. I actually tried using Sage for a few hours today, but it was an excercise in frustration.
