"We" as in consumers don't want it. The media providers do. This is part of a recurring revenue model that they'd like.
Remember the DVD rental model called "Divx" that was perpetrated on the public a few years back by Circuit City and a group of California lawyers?
Broadcast flag is based on that same principle. Media Content providers (aka the MPAA and the cable/television industry at large) would LOVE for a pay-for-play model to be at the basis of every show.
Not only do they bombard us with advertising, they want to limit "fair use" by this. What's ironic is originally the FCC made it clear that they didn't want the broadcast flag to be used as copy protection, but to instead protect businesses like football owners that needed blackout rules like they already are for home games, to generate revenue from tickets/concessions/souveniers in their stadiums. But the media content providers see it as a cash cow. The days of "free" television are coming to an end.
