Audio setup on your living room television

What is the audio setup on your living room television? Do you get your audio through a stereo receiver and external speakers or do you the audio through whatever's built-in on your TV?

Re: Audio setup on your living room television

I do both depending on whats on. Much like I did before BTV. I use the surround sound through the stereo receiver for movies with the family but mostly just through the built-in TV speakers. I don't have to change any settings to do this. Just mute one or the other.

Re: Audio setup on your living room television

I edited the poll choices to include that scenario... I don't know if you can change your choice but at least that choice will be there for others.

Well.... Mine is yet another choice: Both but I don't mute anything.

Re: Audio setup on your living room television

Well might of miss-voted, I don't mute I just don't turn on the receiver if I am not wanting sound from it.(I voted on using both) Most listening is thru the TV as the sound in the newer RPTVs are very good. And I use the receiver if want a little more sound. I use a Toslink connection between PC SBLive and JVC 5.1 receiver.

Merrypig, is there an easy way to do this? I've read a couple of threads dealing with the ac3filter and upmixing but they were very confusing.

sorry, I guess I should post my setup as well. Currently running stereo out of SBAudigy to Sony receiver.

Don't mean to hijack, but this sounds interesting as hell...

I used to have AC3 out via SPDIF to my receiver from my Audigy somehow, and I had to rebuild my machine and it's not working at all now... and obviously I don't remember what I did before to get it to work...

I remember it had something to do with AC3 pass-through and the drivers... if I use ac3filter as you have, will everything go out via SPDIF to my receiver?

Re: Audio setup on your living room television

Hello,

I now exclusively use an external 7.1 amp and speakers. When I just had a stereo amp I used to "blend" the TV speakers in aswell - this created a "centre speaker" effect and helped lock the dialogue to the screen. My 7.1 amp has many modes to create multi channel soundtracks from mono/stereo sources but they generally sound weird, the only exceptions are Dolby Pro-logic and DTS Neo (which both appear to work with normal stereo sources, not just those with a matrixed surround channel).

Martin.

Re: Audio setup on your living room television

Everything goes to external amp and speaker system, TV speakers are turned off. When people are sleeping headphones come on.

Re: Audio setup on your living room television

Currently I just use the speekers on my TV. Once the new HTPC is setup I will use the audio output from the PC to control some 5.1 speakers along with the TV speakers.

Re: Audio setup on your living room television

i split the audio out from my PC to my TV and a set of Altec Lancings. Not 5.1 sound, but at least I get a center channel and a couple of satellites.
