Question about 3.5 and client

Ello.

I'm not gonna do the beta test..have too much on my plate now and I'd be too lazy to report accurate bugs and what not. So don't say sign up and see hehe.

What I'm hoping is to have 2 machines. One to do all the recording and whatever processing I end up with and one just to watch tv and recorded shows. It may sound silly to some of you but the thing that hooked me on BTV was the interface and livetv. I've honestly thought to buy a second license just to do this. When reading about 3.5 I see server/client and think this will do nicely. I'm not really concerned about streaming the vid at this point though that would be a bonus.

I guess my questions for you testers is Has anyone set it up to do this yet and if so what setup are you using? I can use almost any OS though I doubt win3.2 is supported lol. Have you girder users run into any problems using 2 machines?

I know it's way early to ask these things but I'm working on my budget for the next few months and wanted to make room for whatever I might need.

Thanks
Leaf
PS Has anyone else noticed that MS knowledge base has become useless? Articles that refer in circles and such other nonsence.

Re: Question about 3.5 and client

The setup you describe is exactly what im using right now with the 3.5 beta. Basically how things are going to work (I think) are this: you will get a free upgrade to 3.5 (which has a nice list of new features). Then you may purchase ‘client’ licenses which will allow you to install a client version of 3.5 on your secondary machines. These clients will have the ability to connect to your pc running the full version of 3.5, giving you the same abilities as if you were sitting at the pc running 3.5 (well it will only give you the features found in the full screen interface). These abilities include but are not limited to playing back previously recorded shows, viewing live tv, and scheduling recordings.

The system requirements for the network client will be very similar to that of 3.5 except there will be no tuner card requirement.

Does this answer your question?

Re: Question about 3.5 and client

Well the way I understood it was no, but before I started a war here on the forums I decided to look for any official posts concerning this.

The best info that I could find was that there has been no official decision as of right now.

Re: Question about 3.5 and client

Thanks,

What about using a tvcard in each machine to record on main and watch livetv on client? I'm thinking this would be a perfect solution for me short of buying another license.. In this way I wouldn't have to worry over cpu usage on either machine.

Thanks
Leaf

I dual record on my server with less than 5% cpu, using a PVR250 and USBPVR2.

Re: Question about 3.5 and client

I hope that Snapstream don't try and charge registered users for a client (multiple clients and new purchasers would be a different matter), after all I was promised the functionality to stream live TV over six months ago.
Before anyone says "you can stream live TV with version 3.4". Yes you can but if you want decent quality you should use an mpeg encoder, this can't be streamed at present.
On a more positive note - I do "stream" recorded shows over a network by opening them with media player, is it possible to "stream" the buffer in this way (which would be like streaming live TV, albeit with a slight delay)?

Seriously, charging already-registered users for a client could destroy your customers' good will.

Martin.
