CD -> MP3 digitization services

I'm curious to know if people out there would use a service like Get Digital (http://www.get-digital.net/) to convert their CDs to digital. They generally cost between $0.50 - $1 per CD with choices on encode format and bit rate.

And as a follow-on, have folks out there used services like this?

there are plenty of 3rd party programs that will do this for free... And even the ones you pay for will easily surpass the value that this service will bring, unless you don't have a lot of CD's..

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

this service removes the hassle of taking the cd out of the case, sticking it in the drive, waiting for the encode, repeating. Not that huge of a deal, but annoying with a large collection. Don't think it's really comparable to a free program.

That said, I don't have much use for it. I could see those with large collections and big htpc setups going for it though.

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

When I look at something like this, time savings is one thing. But then these guys also, in theory, worry about making sure meta data is consistent and that the resulting file structure is clean. And there's something nice, in concept, about getting it all done and delivered on a couple of DVD-Rs. But it's also not cheap.

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

bah, get itunes, all i have to do is hit the eject button drop the cd in and close the tray, it does the rest automatically and even ejects it when its done. i went through ripping an entire 100cd book in about 8 hours the otherday using my crappy 16x dvd drive for ripping.

this service sounds interesting but not worth it, yeah i can see those lazy people who dont want to do it but anyone with a cd collection and an htpc already knows that:
a) they can do this for free
b) their computer more than likely has atleast 1 program on it that can do it
c) dont have to worry about any type of DRM or other restrictions on the files they rip (unless they are really lazy and didnt turn it off in wmp)

Plus id be slightly worried about shipping my collection to someone, there's no telling what they do on their end, for all you know they will get shutdown next week by the RIAA for copying all those people's cd's to their own personal collection (now thats a neet way to get all the music you want, and hell people are paying you for it, why didnt i think of that)

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

No. At the risk of repeating myself, I 'm a cheap bastard!
I can rip a CD using Nero and mp3pro in a short time, why would I bother paying anyone to do it?
It's done already anyway.
Also I am not buying new CDs anymore. Although I don't download music (I record direct from streams) I dislike the RIAA's current approach, so I am using my limited means of boycott.

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

Ian;
I don't get the "digital" security concept? I haven't been following developments for CDs, but clearly any future CD must be backwards compatible with old equipment.
So why couldn't I just take a new "secured" CD, audio line-in to my computer and record as mp3?

You read about the Magic Marker crack? That tickles my funny bone!

Reallistically seems to me CDs are moribond as a music media anyway. May have a few years left in them, but theyr'e not the future.

I can't really see this type of service taking off unless you've got more than 1000 CDs, but I can see something for DVDs catching on. You send them you DVDs and they encode them onto a hard drive that would have some sort of locking system. This I would pay for.

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

That is an interesting concept.
Currently I have Windows Media Player set to automatically rip when I put in a CD. If I was going to rip my whole collection it would take weeks.
I wouldn't do it because I pretty much have most of my CD's done already. but I can see the point of the service if you have a massive collection and haven't ripped anything. Also a chunk of money laying around

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

Here is what I'd like to be able to do - that's the very reason why about half of my CD collection is still not digitized - put in a CD in the PC that's running BM (et al) and decide where (network) the MP3's are going to go.

Sure I would pay for that.

Re: CD -> MP3 digitization services

Isn't that what windows media player does now anyway?

I just put a cd in and it rips it away to my music store. I don't even recall pressing anything

itunes (and others) can do that, too. BM can't.
