Angry Schedule update polling interval?!

How often is the schedule supposed to update? I'm running the latest version downloaded off the site last week. I've only been able to find settings to "Enable" or "Disable" automatic updates. The system is connected to a cablemodem, and should be getting updates as needed. I would think once / day would be a reasonable rate.

However, now I'm starting to miss out on recording shows! because the program guide information isn't updating! I've got it set to record all new shows. Yet, for some reason some channels release the name of the show that will be playing, but then update it later to say that it's a "first-run" with more detailed information. I'm always shocked to go in there and find out that it thinks a brand new show was a repeat, so it didn't record it!!!

I then go in to the settings, and tell it to download a new program schedule, and TA-DA! It now shows the show as a first-run, with all the detailed information, but it's TOO LATE, it has already missed the recording.

It seems like it updates it's program schedule once every few weeks. Am I correct on this assumption? I would think that you should be allowed to set the rate on something that could cause you to miss recording your favorite shows because the guide has changed since the last update.

I know you can do a manual update, but who wants to go into the settings every day just to make sure their program schedule is up-to-date?!

I did notice this in the release notes for this version: "Reduced frequency of calls to SnapStream.Net for non .Net users." Any idea what that means?!

Any insight on this would be much appreciated.

I believe it updates once a day. ALthough it should not matter as you get 2 weeks of data each time it updates. SO if you miss one here and there no biggie. WHich shows in particular are you talking about. I have never had show data say it is a rerun and then change it the next day. SOmething seems very odd.

The quote you mention about reduced calls to ,net refers to people who don't use .net. XML users to be specific. There was problems, I believe, in earlier versions of BTV hanging trying to access the internet when it really didn't need to because the system was using .net.

In specific, Southpark shows that Next Wed. nights show isn't new (it is). So it isn't set to record it. It doesn't give any details about the show. The same thing happened for today's show. When I updated tonight, it suddenly said it was new, and had more detail. If I don't do a manual update before next Wed. when the show info is updated, or set it to record manually, I'll miss out on recording that show just like I did today.

About a week ago I went to the upcoming recordings, and it didn't have anything beyond the following day. I went to the program schedule, and it showed everything as unavailable. I went and found the program schedule update, and all of the new shows popped in the the program guide and upcoming recordings. I don't think it should have happened like that.

Again, it's always connected to the Internet through a cablemodem. Newest version.. any ideas?

Your logs should indicate if it tried to update. See how often it is trying. As far as guide data that is pretty much out of SS hands. That is handled by a third party source. IF you want to make sure you get all episodes set it to record all. If the episode data is updated it will only record a show once. If the data is incorrect the you may get multiple copies, but better than not at all.

Ok, I've done some checking on this now in the logs. Here's what I've found:

All last month, the schedule updated once every day. On the 26th, I installed the latest version update downloaded off the website.

After installing the latest version, the daily update has stopped. The only updates I show since then have been manual updates.

If others can do a search in

Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\SnapStream\Beyond TV\log

for files containing "Guide Updater Service" that should show when updates were done to the program schedule.

I would think this should be an option that could be changed by the user in the setup. Perhaps it could be added in future versions??

Hmm, I'm seeing the same behavior you mention. The only EPG updates I'm seeing in my logs are those that I initiated myself. And, yes, my Guide troubles seem to have started when I installed the latest version on 3/24

Unhappy Guide Troubles

Just thought I would mention I see the same thing going on with my machine. I am a trial user and have only had the software up and running for 1 week - but when I checked the logs (searched for the "Guide Updater Service" text - I found it in a log for the first day (April 2,2004) - when I installed the software, and also on April 8th - the on on the 8th failed due to my crazy Linksys Router freezing on me. I had some red text on the screen this morning saying "EPD LOW" I initiated a manual update and now all is well again - seems like a glitch maybe.
