Oh good: That was my exact thought too, then I thought maybe I don't know enough about RSS.

I use this nice application that allows me to keep up with RSS forums and blogs using outlook. I use it for several other forums and it works quite well. But as I think about it a bit, I suppose I could do the same by using email notifications. Only if there is a way to set things up so that I get notified if anyone posts to this forum on any subject. Is that possible?

actually, because of a change in hosting situations, this might happen sooner than we expected... we recently moved the discussion boards onto the frontpage of the website (www.snapstream.com) and as a result the traffic has picked up quite a bit. so our host contacted us today and is asking us to move to a dedicated server (vs. the shared, "virtual" server we have right now). so I think we'll probably go from shared to dedicated but eventually replace the whole thing with a solution that we host in-house.

and I'm hoping that the move to the in-house solution will also include an upgrade to the recently released vbulletin 3.0.0, which I do believe has RSS support.

I personally want to see this happen because then we'll be able to somewhat use the boards as a content management system (which just means that making updates to, say for example, the news section of the frontpage of the website could be made a lot easier than it is right now).

suggestions from folks out there on other bulletin board software packages?

Go with the in house solution. Paying an extra $100 buck for a guy to make 2 clicks with a mouse is just a pain in the ass.

Note:
I was hosting a site when some updates to the DB failed and Had to restore the db to the back up. Thats only a few clicks but the host didn't give me permition to do that so I had to pay a guy to do it for me!! I WAS SOOO PISSED.

I think it would also be very useful for the admins of these sites. I find it to be very efficient at keeping track of many forums. But as you say, there is a bit of overhead and risk. In the end I guess it depends on how much you like your forum provider.
