Deinterlacing--During Record or Playback?

Please forgive if this has been asked before, but I searched for about half an hour with no luck.

I recently watched a tv program a friend recorded using BeyondTV with a PVR-250. I couldn't see ANY comb effect, unlike my setups at home (AIW 9700 Pro, WinTV Theater). I couldn't believe the recording was at 640x480, but it was . I was always under the impression that deinterlacing only occured during playback. For his PVR-250, it appears to happen at record time, because the recordings look great played back even on a tablet pc with a crappy video controller. I know that my ATI card has deinterlacing during playback, but what about during recording? Is there some setting to get the card to do it, or to have BTV do it in software? I would MUCH prefer doing it at record time because even though the BTV system is hooked to a TV, I often watch the shows on other PCs around the house and the comb effect drives me nuts . Should I just go get a PVR-250? Does the PVR-USB2 do deinterlacing as well (preferred so I can hook it to my tablet pc as well as other pcs) ?

If you can figure out how to get your 250 to do deinterlacing at record time let us know. You are probably the first .

This isn't something we as consumers have any control over at the moment. SS would have to give us the ability to modify the filter graph for us to be able to add a de-interlace filter.

I've mentioned this to rkuo recently to keep in mind during further development.

I have a PVR-250 with an ATI 9600Pro.

I record at 720 x 576 (PAL) and there is hardly any combing during playback even without any deinterlacing selected in BeyondTV.

In the past with a different video card there was severe combing and I've always assumed that the 9600Pro is doing deinterlacing on its own.

I've had better feedback in an anechoic chamber.
Wondering if that anechoic chamber feedback came with subtitles?

Bored I am. And no waves today

If you use showsqueeze to convert to WMV, you can deinterlace during the transcoding process. This option is in the "advance" options when you create the "quality setting".

I transcode all my mpeg2s from my H250 to WMV because a 1.3mbs WMV gives image quality that is pretty close to 6mps mpeg2, but is a fraction of the mpeg2 file size.

Sorry but may I ask?

What is combing or comb effect?

Thanks.

Now that's funny! I've talked to rkuo about this and pointed out numerious uses for this type of control. It's under consideration for a future release but not 3.5.
