Audio output in stereo?

I have a rather old sound card. This sound card has 1 audio output on it. The audio output is just like for any other sound card. The problem is that the sound card sends out both left and right signals out on the single jack. I ASSUME that computer speakers have some way of differentiating between the left and right signals and routes them accordingly.

This is where I have the problem. I have my BTV machine audio output hooked directly into my TV. I have a converter that takes the output from the PC and then splits it into 2 audio signals and then I use RCA's to hook that to my TV. The split basically only duplicates the signals so I get the exact same sound out of both speakers.

I was wondering if there are some possible solutions to this problem. I am thinking about upgrading the sound card to one that has an optical output and just hooking that into my receiver directly, but I was wandering if there are some other options.

a cheaper solution than buying a new sound card (though they ain't too expensive these days...) is to try this.

Can be used to separate left and right channel signals.

that is, if your card's output is stereo.
