How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

This was one of the forums I searched when trying to figure out the Hauppauge remote & its related software, so I thought I would offer the information I put together on it. I've attached a zip containing 2 files:

1) How to extend irremote-ini.txt
This file contains information regarding editing irremote.ini in order to add:

- new IR codes
- new applications to control
- new commands for an existing application

2) Getting started with JP1.txt
This file contains a tutorial for upgrading a JP1-capable remote so that it can be used with the Hauppauge IR receiver, with the ability to use more than just the 34 buttons on the silver Hauppauge remote.

With this information, it is relatively easy to use irremote.ini to control nearly any application you want and to replace the Hauppauge remote with one that has more buttons and thus is capable of more control over your applications.

A JP1 remote is not a requirement, though it is probably the least expensive solution. A Pronto could be configured to exceed the Hauppauge remote easily. The MX-700 requires more work. If MX-700 info is needed, let me know.

I hope this doesn't duplicate information already here... if so, I searched for the wrong topics.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

The documentation for irremote.ini has been updated, including full details of the ini file layout and descriptions of the available commands.

The latest version of ir.exe contains new functionality, including the ability to send messages to any Windows program. For an updated IR install program to go with these docs download ir32_2.42.22180.exe

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

Using the information above, I was able to program a OneForAll URC 8910 remote to control BeyondTV using a combination of the keys from Philips VCR (0081) and Philips TV (0054). It worked great.

Although not every single 8910 key is mapped in either the TV or VCR mode, there are MORE than enough codes between the two modes to assign to all keys on the 8910, and the keymover feature of the 8910 makes it very easy to get all keys assigned to a single device. I recommend using the VCR code as the starting point, since it covers the largest number of keys. Starting with the VCR codes, I mapped 3 additional keys over from the TV mode (Info, F.Fwd, and F.Rew) to have a fully mapped set of buttons for BTV control.

To save anyone else the time tracking down the keycodes using debug.txt, I attached an MS-Word document listing the codes generated for each button for the two devices.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

I played with a RadioShack 8 in one remote and came up with the map below. I learned some of the keys that didn't have codes or were the same as other buttons. You will have to edit the [Debug.txt] section if you want to use it for debugging.

In the end I tossed it and went back the little remote. I ordered the new remote from Hauppauge. It looks like the way to go.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

I created a new post on how I mapped the OFA Kamelon remote to use irremote.ini.

Thanks all!

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

ejdriscoll, or anyone for that matter.. How do you find out what "CODEXXX" is being sent from the remote?

I'm having some troubles understanding this..

When I open my debug.txt and send commands from my 8910 I get actual names not codes.. I'm using your irremote.ini file but I want to change / add some stuff. I can't figure out how to find out which code numbers are sent..

Another question.. In your word document you have that you mapped the INFO button over.. But then you have the CODE for the Info button as "TV". The irremote.ini requires them to be numbers (like almost all the others you have in your word doc) so how do you map that button to something since it's not a number.

That is also why I want to know how to find the code numbers.

Thanks

The document in post #3, above, should describe the complete ini layout. If you are getting button names in debug.txt, that means those buttons' codes have been mapped to a button name already. If there is no definition for a code, then you see the CODEXXX result instead.

You have to define which System codes are used; then for each System code, you define a Command code translation section where you enter "CodeNum=ButtonName" style definitions; then in an application section, you use the "ButtonName=CommandList" style lines to provide the command(s) to be performed when that button is pressed when using that application.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

Andy's answer is complete. The buttons that produce names like "TV" instead of "CODEXX" have already been mapped from a code to a name in the irremote.ini file.

I personally did NOT add a new SystemCode and code/name mapping to my irremote.ini, I just used the one that was already working, so the button names in my Word doc are the ones that are mapped by default for the Hauppauge remote. Adding a new device section probably would have been a cleaner solution, I was just being lazy.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

Be sure to add the CODES in the [debug.txt] section up to:

CODE127=CODE127{enter}

when using the latest 22180 drivers from Hauppauge.

When I did that I found CODE85 and CODE86 were my FF and REW buttons. With the previous drivers, I think it only went to CODE62.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

I started looking through this but then realized, hey, I've got girder!

I'm using an OneforAll 7800 series, which is the cheapest remote that controls my directv box (actually, that was for Hughes, my RCA has many more controllers) but anyway, it has four programmable buttons in addition to all the presets. Philips code 0081 was the winner for me (if anyone knows of any better codes, please post) it is a vcr code and the Hauppauge IR receiver reads it clearly. I have 30 recognized keys in addition to the four programmed keys, and I just assign it to the functions in girder I want.

In fact, I don't even install the hauppauge remote software, I just place the irremote.dll file in the girder directory and download the girder plugin for it. I wish I could do that with the ATI remotewonder (haven't tried the new plugin, that might work).

Anyway, now I can use my ATI remote, my Hauppauge remote, or any of my OneForAlls (in any remove, as I have x10 remote extenders throughout my house) and I also have my wifi pda with Xronox totalinput. Range is no longer an issue, and I can have one remote in my living room to do it all.

Happy happy, joy joy

thanks for the help...

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

Has anybody tried to control the nStant Media program that comes with the nVidia PureVideo decoder using the irremote.ini file?

I have been able to control BeyondTV, Zoom Player, WMP but am unable to control nStant Media.

I have added "nStant Media=" to the applications list and "[nStant Media]" with the key codes at the end of the file, just the same as any other program, but can't get it to work.

Just hoping somebody has got this working and can show me what it takes to set it up correctly.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

Another easy way to extend the irremote.ini functionality is through the application offered here:
http://www.del337ed.com/remoteconfigure

It's pretty easy to use and will soon offer support for sharing application schemas. That means someone somewhere else can configure it for any application on their machine and you can come along later and download their schema to use directly or even just as a starting point.

Re: How to extend/replace the Hauppauge remote

That is a pretty neat little appliation to help organize and add to that file. I'll have to play with it a bit; could be very useful!
