Question remote viewing of shows?

I have my desktop running BTV which is connected to a wireless router/4-port hub that is connected to my local cable internet service.

I want to be able to log into web admin remotely and view some of my recorded shows.

how do I determine the IP address to connect to?

i.e. http://cable IP address?/local IP address/port number?

I can connect when on my local area wireless network using my local IP, so I know it works...

Thanks,

Tom

You must first "expose" your internal BTV box to the public internet ( the IP and ports ) so every time you enter http://cable_ip_address:btv_port, your router will just pass it along to your BTV box.

You can get you internet IP address a couple ways.

You router probably has a setup page that will tell you. Or go to whatsmyip.com .

Here is a knowledgebase article on setting up your router.

WebAdmin Remote Access Woes

I can access my WebAdmin from my LAN, but I can't access it over the internet. I recently purchased a new D-LINK DI-624 Wireless 108MB G Router, and set up the router's software to forward all ports to my PC's IP address running Beyond TV. Within my LAN, I had no problems accessing and viewing shows. However, remote access from a PC outside my network worked for a little while, but then stopped. I had to power cycle the router to get it to work again, and then again after a short time, it would stop working?! I thought it was a problem with the router itself, so I returned it to the store and purchased the US Robotics Wireless 100MB Turbo Router. Anyway, to make a long story short...SAME PROBLEM!!! I don't understand what the problem is. I set up the software correctly, so I can't figure what I'm doing wrong. I had this working perfectly before on my old USR Wired router, but that stopped working all together, thus prompting a replacement. Can anyone shed some light on this? Maybe a Wireless G Router that you are using that works with Beyond TV's Remote Access Web Admin? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THanks,

Kevin.

Well im not sure what kind of troubleshooting tips to tell you, other than make sure your pc’s lan ip is not changing on you (which would change where you need the port forwarded to).

Anyways I have a linksys wrt54g router and can access my machine from the internet (using the proper port forwarding settings).

I am using a Dlink router and the way I solved the problem was by setting up a DMZ on my router which forwards incoming traffic to my media pc. Works great. My router is a dlink-614+ (802.11b), but seems to the job well. (Make sure you have latest firmware.)

There are some security issues with setting up DMZs, so you would probably want to read up a little on them, or contact DLINK support. Their support is excellent most of the time and phone call is free. Why not...

For your issue of shows stopping after a while, you may want to showsqueeze into a smaller file size. I have mine setup for Cable/DSL Medium (390 kbps / 85mb per hour) and it streams fine over the net and file size is small enough that friends can download shows if they want.

I'm beginning to think that it is not the router. I just exchanged the USR Turbo router for a Netgear 624 Wireless G 108Mbs router. I was told on the forms that someone had the Netgear 614 wireless router and had the WebAdmin Remote Access working fine. Well, I set up the all the correct ports, and the same problem. I can access everything from my LAN, but trying through an outside internet connection, "Page Cannot Be Displayed" This is my 3rd router that I've tried (DLINK, USR, now NETGEAR). This can't be the router can it? I mean, what are the chances of all three being defective. I even tried to set up the DMZ on my one PC running Beyond TV, and I still can't access it from the outside internet world. Is there something that I'm missing here? I just don't get it.

DMZ should have worked, thats pretty much opening the door wide open for internet traffic. Did you try and set it up without Firewall? Are you positive you are using the IP address of your BTV pc? I would do Start > Run > CMD > IPCONFIG , and see what shows. Once I had the right IP setup in the router...it just worked.

Yeah, I'm sure that I'm using the right IP address of the Beyond TV PC. I ran ipconfig, even released and renewed to make sure. I haven't tried disabling the firewall. I'm not exactly sure how to do that. The DMZ thing was weird. Even after enabling it, I still could not access it externally. In theory, if I use my external IP address:8129 from a PC on my LAN, it should just treat it like an external web page right? I mean, that's how I was able to check before on my original wired USR that external access was working. I would just type http://external IP address:8129 from a PC on my LAN, and it would open up. The reason I ask is because it's hard to test it from an outside internet connection because I have to wait until I try it from work. I just want to troubleshoot from home right there and then and want to make sure that my theory is correct. Anyway, I don't know why it worked with my old USR wired router and why I'm having all these troubles with these new routers.

Sorry that I can't help you out much.... Im probably telling you wrong. If you still have your DLINK router, you should call their tech support and have them help you out.

Well I have been told (actually on this board somewhere I think) that typing the external ip address of a machine that is actually on your local network should not work on business class routers for security reasons (but it does work on most home grade routers like my Linksys).

I just opened up one of My PVRs to the Internet, and ran into this exact situation. I could get to web admin locally by using http://server name:8129. If I tried to connect from a local workstation using the internet url (myname.dyndns.tv:8129), I would get a page not found. I confirmed with my ISP that they were not blocking any ports, and spent quite a bit of time trying to get this to work over the weekend. On Moday, I tried it from work and got right to the web admin page. I wasn't sure why, but this explains it. I have a Netgear WebSafe RP114 router.
