Snapstream server contact snapstream and Null scans

Snapstream,

Can you please explain why in my firewall logs I see my system that is running snapstream attempting to contact TCP 207.235.97.98:8128 (www.snapstream.com) every 7-10 minutes?

This is followed by attempted NULL scans from the same address back to the orignating system.

Needless to say I'm not real happy and I've shutdown my snapstream server. I'm also pretty sure others won't be real happy to find out about it.

I'm going to put a sniffer on it later to find out what is actually being sent.

You really should consider looking at the configuration options for any software you install on your computers.

Disable the tracker client, under options.

Tracker settings

Tracker client
Specify whether to enable the tracker client

Connect to SnapStream.Net

the contact with "tracker.snapstream.net" is for the purposes of providing dynamic DNS service and other facilities. None of these have yet been implemented -- you should have seen a TrackerConnect Failed message in your activity log.

And, as Russ mentioned, the user always has the ability to turn off this communication.

I went through all the options like I normally do setting up any new system. If you look at the "configure" page on 1.10a the options listed are:
Getting Started
General
Record
Channels
Server
Web Server
Streaming Server
User
Security
Diagostic Test

Everything there is set to keep stuff local and standalone. Do you see anything about "Tracker" in this list?

If you look at the "menu bar" on the left between "Channels" and "Server" there is "Tracker" listed. It isn't part of the 'Getting Started' and it isn't part of the normal menus... I think it is a bad choice to by-default have programs broadcast information - but then that is one of the reasons I have a firewall.

sorry -- didn't even realize that the configure page left it out. probably because we haven't been doing anything with it. we'll correct this so it's clearly visible in both places.
